What will direct swap trans?

I have a 74 six cylinder 3 speed on column. What trans four speed or better will bolt up directly to the bell housing and use the existing clutch etc. I do realize I will have to add a shifter

Cast Iron Saginaw should swap in as a Muncie and a T10

Re: What will direct swap trans?

The MY6 A833 usually has a Dodge bellhousing to transmission bolt pattern unless you get one of the dual pattern transmissions. You'll probably need to match the input shaft spline count on the clutch friction disc. It's not a common transmission.

The automobile Saginaw 4 speed is a drop in with the exception of the floor shifter hole. The stick will come up right next to the seat. It's not a common transmission.

The SM465 will bolt to the bellhousing but you may have to change the friction disc to mate with the SM465 input splines... I would do that anyway once you have the transmission off. This transmission is very common.

All of them will need you to perform the driveshaft dance... except maybe the Sagniaw 4 speed.

Re: What will direct swap trans?

As mentioned above, a 60s-70s Muncie is the right length, and has the rear mounting holes in the right place, but make sure you know the input and output shaft spline count. As I recall, the Saginaw 3-speed has 10 in and 27 out. Most of the more common Muncie M20 wide ratio transmissions have 10 input and 27 output, but later models have 26 in, 32 out. Worst case, you'd have to get a new clutch disc and driveshaft yoke.

On another note, for those looking to convert to an auto trans, a TH350 with short (6") tail shaft is also the same length as a Saginaw 3-speed, and has 27 splines on the output shaft, so will bolt right up to the crossmember and driveshaft yoke.

Re: What will direct swap trans?

The TH700R4 is 27 spline too but it's longer than the TH350 or the Saginaw 3 speed

Re: What will direct swap trans?

I'm going from sm465 to nv3500 and was told my couch setup would remain the same. If your for an a883 I'll have a 4x4 version soon.

The Saginaw 3 speed was 2wd only... He'd need the MY6 A833 not the MM7.

If you're looking to get rid of it I'd post that MM7 A833 for sale on craigslist or fleabay.

The Saginaw 3 & 4 speed, some Muncie M20 M21 M22 4 speeds, NP-A833 MY6, GM-SM465, and NV3500 use a 1-1/8" dia ten spline input shaft. They all had 27 spline output except the SM465 that has a fixed yoke output. So. The clutch disc and driveshaft will mate with all of them.
I would highly recommend replacing the clutch friction disc and the throwout bearing... and giving a critical look at the flywheel and pressure plate contact surfaces while the transmission is off. I'd probably do the rear main seal and the transmission input seal as well...

Not all Muncie M20, M21, & M22 had 10 spline in and 27 spline out. There are iterations of all 3 that had 26 spline input and 32 spline output.

The TH700R4, 4L60, & TH350 had 27 spline output yokes.
The TH400 has a 32 spline yoke.

Case lengths vary so the driveshaft is subject to modification in some cases.
