Primer color?

What color is factory primer? Black or reddish color? My truck is medium olive/white from the factory. The reason for the question is my truck has both. Black under most of the body, but I see traces of the reddish color around the windshield and under the cab. I know the second owner of my truck had it repainted, but I'm beginning to wonder if it was wrecked and repaired.

Re: Primer color?

Cab and doors would be red, rest of body is black......

Re: Primer color?

Why did they use 2 different color primers?

I would assume cab went down a different assembly line from the rest.

Thumbs up Re: Primer color?

Thanks both of you. The color theory makes sense. It just always made me wonder if my truck had been wrecked sometime in its life before I got her. Now I feel even better, having a 46 year old truck with all the original sheet metal and the original drivetrain.

Re: Primer color?

It could be both. I have a 69 truck cab on the flipper dolly and it has the paint on the back panel and inside it was born with. The back of the cab had red primer and the inside floor board[and underneath it as well] had black primer. From what I could tell the back of the cab where I saw red primer was the factory color. Jim

Re: Primer color?

Were earlier trucks/suburbans different? My 65 has black primer hood and red primer on doors/body.

Re: Primer color?

The fenders/hood and bed parts where assembled in a separate factory or farmed out to a supplier (modern times) thus primered in black... often dipped. The cab would have been assembled at the final plant from raw stampings thus primered red for better rust protection. The door I think could have gone ether way.
