Not real satisfied w/new carpet...question

I installed my new, molded carpet into my 62c10 last Sunday. The carpet was "pre molded" and looks to be a good quality carpet, ordered from a reputable, online auto carpet store. The problem I am having with the carpet is that it is too short in the front. I can clearly see where the transmission hump is molded into the carpet but to set the carpet where the pre molded hump is, the carpet is much too short in the front. When you open the door and look towards the firewall, you can see where the rug isn't up under the dash enough and your looking at the floor board. So, if I pull the rug forward to cover the floorboards, the "molded trans. hump" in the carpet is a good 3" in front of the actual trans hump in the floor of the truck. I filled a couple heavy type rubbish bags with water and let them sit, all week, on the rug over the hump trying to get the rug to take a new shape over the hump. Well, come to the conclusion today, I just am not going to be able to get the rug to remold around the hump. I guess my question is, should I slide the rug back to where the molded hump fits and just try to live with the carpet being too short? Is this how all replacement carpets are and you just have to deal with it? Geesh, I am putting a lot of time and money in my truck over the winter to get it just how I want it and I would have a hard time accepting this. You can't help but see it when you open the door to get into the truck. Should I just eat it and try ordering a new carpet from a diff place? I have already trimmed the carpet up some, assuming it was going to take shape with 10-12 gallons of bagged water sitting on it all week, so I really can't send it back. Pretty discouraged, I busted butt last Sunday trying to make it work. What would you guys do?

The pic doesn't really show how poor it actually looks, the actual hump in the floor is 2 or 3" Behind where the rug is showing it.

Re: Not real satisfied w/new carpet...question

Ok, slid the carpet back to where it is supposed to be, the tranny hump is lined up and the door opening cut outs. This is what you look at when you open the door to enter the truck.

Has anyone out there installed a carpet recently and if so, is this what it looked like? I'm really trying to figure out if I got a bad stamped carpet or this is what it was intended to be. Maybe this is how they looked from the factory in 62' and so this is how the aftermarket companies design their carpet sizes. It isn't that they tried to skimp on material because the rear of the carpet is about a foot too long. Don't know what to think. Trying to decide to reorder a carpet from a diff. vendor and assume it will be a better fit or bring my truck to the upholstery shop.

61k10 is right. You are missing your firewall pad it should be black and made out of a cardboard-like material and will mount to the firewall with little plastic clips. Once you have one in place you shouldn't be able to see any of the firewall or floor.

Re: Not real satisfied w/new carpet...question

The carpet manufacturer probably used an OEM rubber pad as a pattern for the carpet which met the firewall pad just above the level of the hump. AFAIK carpeting was not a factory option in these trucks.

Re: Not real satisfied w/new carpet...question

Oh, ok. I had no idea about a pad. The carpet I took out must have been from a custom shop, it covered much better. Well, I guess I have my answer, I will order a firewall mat today. Not real happy about that but sounds like that is just the way it is. Thanks for the replies, now I have a better understanding.

I had to use a heat gun and carefully heat up the molded areas and work it a little bit by hand. It's by no means perfect but looks pretty good.

I had the same problem with mine. Once carpet settled in it shrunk exposing the sound deadener on top. It still looks ok but doesn't have the custom look that a upholstery shop would do. I think yours came out good! It just needs some heat and steam to smooth it out.

Ordered new firewall mat, I hope this makes me feel a little better about the whole carpet thing. We shall see, I will post pics when installed so others can see.

That carpet looks like it is for high hump and you have low hump.
