4X4 and transfer case questions

I have a 79 K10 plow truck that constantly breaks down when it snows. I have the opportunity to get a 87 K10for dirt cheap as it has a blown motor. My question is the transfer cases are interchangeable even if the newer truck has a th400 or th400 trans? I have a motor to put in the "new" truck but im not sure which is going to be more advantageous

Re: 4X4 and transfer case questions

The 79 should be a np203 or np205 maybe. The 87 should be a 700r4 with a np208 on it.They won't swap with each other with out a adapter kit and input shaft swap in the trans. If both had the same trans and t case you could swap them.

Re: 4X4 and transfer case questions

How does one tell the difference between them all the transfer case came out of a well used 1977 or 1979 truck its currently in a 79 truck K10 I know a 203 is chain driven and a 205 is gear driven but can you tell from the outside of the case? I think I have the NP203 does an NP205 direct swap in?

Re: 4X4 and transfer case questions

205 has a small circle center case towards the back with 3 bolts.

Re: 4X4 and transfer case questions

They all should have a tag on it,The np205 and np203 both have a iron case and do look a like. The np208 has a aluminum case to it.

Re: 4X4 and transfer case questions

If you still have marking by the shifter the 203 doesn't have a 2 hi.
