Original dash repair

After reading reviews and taking input from message boards I decided replacing replacing my destroyed dash pad on my 85 k10 was inevitable. But I also learned that one I did not want to go the dash pad cover way (too cheap if a look and too easy lol) and two the aftermarket options were ok but not ideal fitnent or quality when comparing to the OEM dash pad with the metal bracing. So I lucked out and found one on Craigslist for $60! All but two metal clips were intact which won't be a problem since I took the ones from mine off. There were 2 cracks but legitimate cracks. But after reading about the dash pad filler product by urethane supply company I decided to tackle the project 👍. I mean why not??? $60 plus $25 in supply's it is worth it. Anyway here is a little progress so far once I go back in the house and post pics from the pc

Time for the Dash pad filler:








I spread it on kind of heavy. I then knocked down the high spots with a small putty knife. The filler is much like JB Weld in that it is a two part. With one small tube of hardener.

Now time to sand it down. Again I used a small putty knife to spread it on but also used that same knife to knock off the high spots much like when you do your first coat of drywall mud. I then lightly used a 60 grit to further knock it down. Then finished with a 220 grit on a sanding block. I liked the results but as I though the perforated holes for the speakers did not work out so well. I used a drill bit to recreate the holes but in the spots where the cracks were it didn't seem to take hold in between. I think now I will need to apply some filler underneath to strengthen it then let it dry and then drill. Although I did find that if I dabbed the holes with the drill bit while applying it wet I was able to secure a good hole pre sanding. We will see!

I will be applying a 2nd very small coat. I can still slightly see the crack. But so far I love this product. Sands very easy like fiberglass. And did not take very long. Spent maybe 2 hours total so far on it.

I haven't used it yet, I didn't know SEM made this stuff until another member used it on a door panel repair. Their products always work well for me. I've been wondering if the two products you've picked might not be the winning combo. I'll be anxious to see how they work together, not just on the bench, but after installing it in the truck. The flexing part of the reinstall in particular.

I found it brother! I finally realized it was a different message board all together. Nice work man your was pretty rough. I wish I had not thrown mine to the trash now grrrrr. My original one that is. But I am definitely happy I went with the dash I found. The lost important thing to me was a dash that looked exacly like the original. Meaning all the same grill holes. This may end up as a show truck who knows! Plus I wanted the added challenge of fixing the cracks along the holes. Why I do this to myself I dont know smh

Oh you didn't call great stuff gap and crack filler??? Lmao! Ah I got ha now. Yeah not a bad way to fix it. But I saw allot of flaws. I'm hoping mine looks damn near perfect...we will see soon enough. Hope to add the texture tomorrow

I think the expansion foam would work good if u needed to fill in chunks of missing foam. The dash pad filler looks good for the 2nd layer then the texture. I need to do my beat up door panels to. I'm just at the fiberglassing stage.

Hey grid, how's the pad comin? I jumped into mine and I just got done sanding the foam. I decided to fill in all 3 speaker holes b/c they were all a little rough.

Unfortunately I haven't done anymore work. Got busy at work and family stuff. Hope to spend some time on it tomorrow! Yeah I still may cover the middle speaker hole. But I'm gonna give it my best shot first. Look forward to it

Hey where did u get the dash filler? Was it a local place or did u have to order it?

From urethane supply co. Online. Was $16 plus shipping but you will need the texture spray and adhesion promotor for the coating before the texture. I ordered everything but the promotor online. I'm leaving now to get the promotor from auto zone . I will be posting pics real soon of the progress today!
