Fishing wire into doors for electronic locks

The locks on these trucks being annoying (key only, can't push button in and hold when closing, etc) I wanted to add an alarm that supports keyless doors. That's easy.

The hard part is getting the wires to the lock actuators. It's not like I have power windows and other wires I can run alongside... it's the first wire.

So I'm faced with:

a) Where to drill the holes that gives me access on both sides
b) How to drill them with the doors still on (not removing them)
c) What to use for a grommet or flex piece to cover the wiring once in there

I'm sure any basic stereo shop could bust it out easily, but I'd like to continue the theme of doing everything myself.

I've thought carefully about whether I want to do this, and I'm definitely doing the alarm, so I might as well. Like I said, I won't go to the lengths of pulling the doors, but you can often do it from inside the door with the door panel off, drilling right through door and cab at the same time, and then they line up. But I'd like to talk to someone who's done it successfully before!

nice^^.... im not shure but I think the 71 and 72 have the speaker on the doors but I honestly don't know how the original set up was installed from the factory since my 70 and 71 are in completely in piece at.the moment..

Here is what I did only bad thing is the windows do not work with the door open. If you look at the very top switch that is the dome light and you can go through anywhere below that. I did not take the doors off to drill the holes.

Okay mine is a 67, took some pictures for you to get an idea. Measure from the inside of the door 1" in towards the cab and 1" up from the lower hinge. I used a small pneumatic angle drill with a short bit to drill a pilot hole into the door from the jamb. Once the pilot was complete I used a 3/8" drill bit to drill from the door through to the cab (with the door closed of course) Once done I used split wire loom and wire loom grommets that snapped in to the holes. I have attached some pics. If you are interested in my hood latch let me know and I will provide more info. Hope this helps

I'm using stainless door jamb wire looms for my power door locks. Have not installed it on the truck yet but I've installed them on a square bodied C10 & Chevelle and they work pretty slick. Look good too.

You install one side and adjust it all the way out, then put a little white grease on each one and close the door it will mark the other side.

I used a 90 degree Craftsman cordless 19.2V drill with a hole saw to drill the holes in the cab and a regular Craftsman cordless 19.2V drill on "low" setting to drill the holes in the doors from the inside of the door. There is a support inside the door that you will need to drill a hole through also. I will take a pic tonight of the boots I used. I bought them off of ebay used so I don't know the brand. I have a lot of wiring going through the boots, as I have power windows, locks, and speakers in the doors. I did not remove the doors to drill any of the holes. I drilled holes through the kick panel near the vent and ran the wires through a plastic "caplug" with the end cut out. It was not easy fishing that many wires through the holes without cutting into the insulator, I used a fishtape for that. I will post pics tonight.

Here is the passenger side. It is basically done except for mounting the switch in the door for the power window. The power locks don't have a switch, only a fob (it is a VH Coachworks kit). Sorry about the sideways pics, tried to rotate and save it but I couldn't do it.

This is the hole in the driver's side door pillar. I used a 1 1/8 hole saw which is perfect for the boot that I am using. I used a 7/8 hole saw for the hole under the dash and put a red plastic "caplug" with the end cut out in the hole to protect the wire, which is also wrapped in 1/2 black plastic loom that can be bought from NAPA. There is also a pic of the drill I used to drill the hole in the cab without removing the door. And finally, a pic of the boot I am using. I bought them used off of ebay a couple years ago, not sure of the intended OEM application.

I will post pictures of the latch, I bought 2 spares, never have needed them but like to have spares. It is just a 12V latch bought on Amazon. Originally it was wired in to a bat switch in the cab but with the addition of the alarm I wired it in to the alarm trunk release option. The part that is on the hood I fabricated and will also be included in the pictures with rough measurements. I will post the pictures tonight when I get home.
