[Task Force Era]

A 1-ton 1956 3800 Carryall Panel. It's heavy and big. And it's really heavy and really big. Made a trade with a friend of mine to get this behemoth in my possession. It once served it's life in a fire department. No clue what the hell I'm gonna do with it yet. I guess I could see if this ol engine will fire up first. Apparently it was drove to where it's been sitting for years. It's gonna need patching all the way around the bottoms. A fender or two. Etc etc etc

I think the problem with those things was people saw them at a dealer ship long ago, and thought I could load that thing up till the tires pop, and didn't realize how difficult it is to get stuff out of them, difficult to maneuver, and difficult to find two parking spots together to put it in. They were cumbersome and just awkward. They rode like there was 4x4 blocks under the springs.
Put power steering and disc brakes on it, a little more power, better suspension, and paint it orange or white or red so people can see it, and now you got something! I'd keep the 3.90 or 4.11 in the rear though, otherwise, it will be hard on clutches or transmissions.

Being a 1 ton frame, would a Camaro type front clip swap be feasible? Maybe swap this thing over to 5 lug

the frame is a little thicker but the same width as all the other trucks
and straight as a stick from front spring hanger to the rear bumper
you'd obviously need to drop the rear end a foot or so

the 3800 trucks need a full load to handle right, empty they just bounce around
when i was building my first house i'd load my 59 3800 with shingles, bricks and gravel
don't shoot me; it was my only vehicle

Bet it does, I got my first sway bar off one of those things. The guy at the wrecking yard said it didn't have one, and I told him if it doesn't have one, I"ll give you 20 bucks. But if it does, you give it to me for $20 bucks. he agreed, and sure enough, he was taking it off for me and I had my twenty ready the whole time.

Being a one ton frame, to me the only thing to do is keep it one ton.
Industrial Chassis sells an IFS kit to put Dodge Dakota components in there, which is actually one-ton bearings & ball joints, etc. You can then use a 13" 8 lug rotor from a full size Dodge on the Dakota spindle. Details on their site.
Chevy 14 bolt rear with a disc kit on it will do anything you'll ever ask it to power wise and you can, with mix & matching hubs, get it down to 62" wide.
Chevy 6.0's are a no brainer for power and came in full ton gassers. If you want big block, put an 8.1 in there. 455 ft-lbs right out of the box with an 8.1 - can't complain about that.
4L80e or NV4500 trans, both totally appropriate.
I know it's your truck and you'll do what you want but to me, the heavier duty trucks are a bit more special and it'd be a shame to neuter it by grafting muscle car suspension onto it. The way I describe above, it'd haul whatever weight you can throw in it or hitch behind it. It'd stop *way* better than if it had typical 5-lug parts and wouldn't cost all that much, less than a lot of after market options.

The Industrial Chassis front crossmembers that Yossarian19 mentioned aren't spendy compared to a lot of them and for the strength you get. Steve does a great job with them.
