Turbo 350 to 700r4
I'm sure it has been ask on here a few thousand times, but I want to change the Turbo 350 in my 70 Suburban to a 700r4. A friend of mine says that I simple need to move the engine forward and use a different mounting location and I can move the trans mount, and it will save me from having to cut the driveshaft... Has anyone done or heard of that?
Thanks in advance for any help. |

Re: Turbo 350 to 700r4
I guess you could do that. Seems like the backwards way of doing things.
I know that I would make the driveshaft fit the truck not the other way around. Your shaft could probably use new joints and a balance anyways. Fwiw I've had 3 shafts in my truck

Re: Turbo 350 to 700r4
Driveshafts cut is under a hundred bucks with new u joints. Way easier.

Yes tit can be done that way I did my SWB that way put new u-joints in and smooooooothh. You need to drill a coupla holes for the cossmember when you move it back easy-peasey . You will need a TV cable the life line of the 700 and the correct bracketry . Do a search it has been covered 100 times

Re: Turbo 350 to 700r4
Your friend must like to do things the more difficult way
Much easier to just redrill tranny mount holes then worry about room for your cooling system and make more weight over your front end, which would actually result in handling issues. Moving an engine forward in a chassis, is against every principle of improved drivability for a vehicle, which is even worse in a pickup than a car

Re: Turbo 350 to 700r4
It depends on if you are talking about a 2wd or 4wd. It's its 4wd, moving the engine forward saves from having a new longer front shaft made. It also only moves the engine to the 2wd position.

Re: Turbo 350 to 700r4
I would not move the engine , check out a 2004r , it will go right in , if you have a tall rear gear and want a 700r4 , then moving the transmission crossmember back and cutting the driveshaft is a better choice

Re: Turbo 350 to 700r4
Moving the engine involves more than drilling a few holes. The exhaust length will change, the radiator hoses, fan and pulley clearance change plus, on a 2WD, I would think there are oil pan clearance issues.

Re: Turbo 350 to 700r4
Wootown,
2wd or 4wd? I started this exact swap last year on my BB 4x4 and totally agree with everything said above. Never had to move the engine, just drill the new hole for trans crossmember and have the DS shortened and balanced. Much less hassle and time on the garage floor in my case. Any questions or if you need some pics, PM me and I'll get some info your way. Hope this helps. Roger

Re: Turbo 350 to 700r4
Not only do you need a TV cable setup but you will also need to install some sort of control for the torque convertor lock up. There are a few different options, Bowtie Overdrives and B&M both offer solutions. Like kaycee stated, a search will provide you all the info you could ever need.
