anyone use an 82-92 camaro automatic shifter on their 55-59?
I have a turbo 350 installed on my 56 and I cant seem to find a c10 column shifter under $150. a buddy gave me a stock Camaro shifter (cable) and I figure I can get it to work but wondered if anyone has pics or experience doing this?...thanks

Re: anyone use an 82-92 camaro automatic shifter on their 55-59?
I did this in my 57 back before my current build (which has TCI 700R4 and Lokar). Because it was temporary and I didn't want to put the money into a longer cable, I just tack welded the shifter backwards on the trans cover. I know, I know - pretty sad. Again, I knew I was going to upgrade soon so ... Bottom line - the Camaro cable is not long enough - will need a longer one.

Most of the GM shift cables for similar years are pretty much the same except length.
This just an example and no suggestion to buy but the cable shown is 29.5 inches long. The link to the side shows more options for cables. http://www.ebay.com/itm/ATP-Y240-Shi...-/390965827217 Another option might be to put the shifter further forward to make the cable work and fab a longer handle but you would probably loose the lock out feature unless you are a seriously creative fabricator. That might be a challenge though. Build your own long handle shifter that has the setup you have to work to get it out of park.

thanks guys. yes, i'll try placing it forward or even in reverse...I could do this as a temp thing and after I can drive and work out the bugs, I can hopefully find a steering column locally

Re: anyone use an 82-92 camaro automatic shifter on their 55-59?
When I was figuring out my column shift to TH350 relationship I found that the distance from the shifter pivot to center of cable connection and transmission shift lever pivot to center of cable connection need to be the same for stock shifter detents to match the transmission. It is best to put the shift lever and transmission lever in neutral to make sure any neutral safety switches, etc. are lined up correctly. In your case you will need to measure the distance on the shifter and find a transmission lever that has the same geometry. Also check lever orientation. I used B&M racing shifter cable and transmission lever/bracket on mine.
