There was a return style fuel rail on some of the truck manifolds. You would need to run that as a return back into your tank.

I guess what I don't understand is that the returns not on the fuel rail it's a port in the manifold

Got a pic of it? most 2005 i have seen were a returnless fuel rail. Just realized you are probably talking about the purge valve. Yes this can be taken off and removed from the tune to stop a check engine light

Re: 2005 Silverado 5.3 swap
The vapor return port is located on the top of the intake with a black plastic line clipped to it. You can unplug the sensor and remove the plastic line. With the sensor unplugged, it won't open, so there's no need to find a plug. Also, you can find a shop to delete the evap system as well as the O2 sensors behind the catalytic converters.

Re: 2005 Silverado 5.3 swap
As stated above, that line would be the purge line, that takes
the fumes from the gas tank ( thru the charcoal canister ) and burns them. It's part of the emissions system. You will need to decide if you want to run without emissions. That decision will impact the method of gas tank venting that you will need to use with your new tank.

Re: 2005 Silverado 5.3 swap
The fuel rail lines are another separate issue.
If the fuel rail has a return line, that line takes the fuel supplied to the engine that is in excess of what is required at that time for producing the power you need, and returns the excess to the tank.

Re: 2005 Silverado 5.3 swap
I swapped a 4.8l into my 68 and I used the factory fuel pump in an aftermarket fuel tank behind the rear axle. (i used the entire wiring harness from the donor vehicle).
I swapped a 5.3l/4l60e into my 65 Buick Skylark station wagon and I used an after market inline fuel pump with corvette fuel filter/regulator with two fuel return lines to the factory fuel tank. The factory fuel sender had a return line on it, but I had to add a second line. I used an aftermarket transmission pan drain plug and 1/8th not barbed fitting to a return hose from the intake fuel rail. - Josh
