1964 GMC 1000 with a 292ci

I just wanted to share my current build with the community and say thank you to all of those who have helped with their advice directly or indirectly through their threads. I recently picked up this 1964 GMC 1000 with an inline 6 as a daily driver/first truck for my 15 year old son. We are in the process of updating to truck with some mods to make the driving easier and safer on a daily basis. The front has gotten disc brakes and a sway bar from ECP with a hydroboost system to come. The steering has being upgraded to a Unisteer rack and pinion system with new bushing and KYB shocks all around from the guys at Summit. We will be tackling the gearing in the differential soon to make freeway speeds less stressful on the engine. The interior is getting an upgrade in the seatbelt department and the bench seat will be upholstered in a field tan waxed cotton fabric. Due to the truck being used to haul stuff, we are considering using Rumber, an extruded recycled tire board product, for the bed.

Here are a few pictures of the build so far:

Thanks! Not to spoil your bubble or anything, but that engine is actually either a 230 or 250.

How are you able to tell? My engine looks exactly the same and doesn't match the I6 website 292 pictures but the casting number (3851659) on my block says 292.

edit... Ah the fuel pump is in a different spot.

The fuel pump is located right next to the dizzy, the smaller 4 inch side covers and the location of the dipstick tube.

According to the Inliner's Power Manual your casting number is a 63-66 292. But several times I have seen the same casting numbers on different blocks. For example, Casting number 3854036 is on a 66-70 230, and a 62-79 250. So not to uncommon to see that. Unless your fuel pump is in the middle of the engine and the side covers are 6 inches tall you don't have a 292. Another way to tell is the higher block deck height from the water pump on the 292 vs smaller engines and the bypass hose on the 292 that isn't on the smaller engines.

Re: 1964 GMC 1000 with a 292ci

Two things I look at to identify the 292 are the taller side covers of the 292 and the location of the fuel pump in relation to the motor mount, behind versus in front. I'm sure there are other ways, but these are quick. EDIT: I see TJ responded with a more complete answer

Yep! And you have the taller side covers. I forgot to mention the passenger side mount is in a different location as well.

Newbie here...

Is the 292 more desirable and/or rare?

Thanks

Depends on the application mostly. The 250 is the most desirable for hot rodding and the 292 mainly for stock or mildly upgraded applications. Both are super common. I chose my 292 to hotrod as it does have a power advantage over the 250, mainly in torque. But the 250 is much cheaper to hotrod, and can still make some killer power. You considering a build?

Thanks for the info.

It was a one owner truck and is pretty much unmolested so I was looking forward to getting it on the road and enjoying it as is for now. Perhaps I would consider modifying it down the road.

Thanks for the heads up. I took the previous owner for his word about the engine size. I will be looking at the casting numbers later this week. As I am learning, I am grateful for the advice, it makes getting the right parts easier when you know what you have to work with.

Yeah, they are a good motor stock or modified. Not super fast, but have a good proven record for reliability.
