1958-59 GMC Hood ornament (Bird)
Is there any company out there reproducing the GMC hood oraments the chrome bird for the 1955-59 years. Most interested in the style I have pictures which I believe are for the 58-58 years.

I would be interested in finding this out too. In my research so far, I have had no luck.

Page 60 of the new LMC catalogue has some. Only up to the 1956 year of production though.

Re: 1958-59 GMC Hood ornament (Bird)
Man, this reminds me of a 58 Parts truck i bought off a guy for $300 and it had a BIG
chrome airplane looking hood ornament on it that illuminated up in the front of it, well i took it off the hood not knowing what it was off of and a few years later looked it up and it was off a 56 Pontiac, My Son sold it on E-bay for $550.00 Allen |

Re: 1958-59 GMC Hood ornament (Bird)
57 chevy3100, your pictured hood ornament is off a 55 Chevy car.
Also, tsmith8 the LMC re-popped hood ornament you mentioned is defiantly not for a GMC, but I don't recall ever seeing one like that on anybody's Chevy truck. I sure would like to find a GMC hood ornament myself, but it probably won't ever happen. If I did, I know that wouldn't be able to afford it! |

The 50s truck hood ornaments are so cool. I'm surprised most guys don't run them. I'm looking for one for my 54 but they are pricey!

That item on ebay is crazy money. But this is the line that really gets me: "Quality plating on a ornament like this is $1000." Really?????

Re: 1958-59 GMC Hood ornament (Bird)
I suspect it would cost more to restore the pot metal so i could be plated then it would to plate, and quality plating is expensive. Keep in mind pot metal pops when it corrodes and it takes a lot to fix. Last unrestored one i saw sell was just a hair over 400.

So. Opinion, leave it or make it a plain hood again?
Anyone got pics or both? |
