Ways to take off layer of spray paint?

Like the title says. Previous owner spray painted over parts of the truck with a different blue and it has runs everywhere. Anyone know of a safe way to take that off? Eventually its going to get painted but I wanted to see what I could do with the current paint its got so I could focus on drivetrain first. Definitely know its not going to turn out perfect but it figured id give it a try. Any help or suggestions/directions on how to do this is greatly appreciated!

Seems like you are putting the cart before horse. If it was me I would hit the whole truck with some 220 grit and spray some primer. However, what is one there is most likely preventing further rust, so i unless you are planning on fixing the dents, and other body work, i may be inclined to look the other way.

I think I would leave it as is if you're planning on a repaint.

I don't see any original primer anywhere (would be red oxide or black depending on what panel we're talking about) so it doesn't look like your truck has any original paint, and it looks to be multilayered with primer, old blue, primer, and new blue?

This guy did it on a 65 mustang (he mentions his process in first post) but I don't know if this will work in your case as he had good original paint underneath a crappy respray.

I used CLR on mine a scotch brite pad

Thanks for that link that is crazy how the paint came out. I'm definitely going to try how he did it. After all whats the worst that could happen lol.

I doubt the paint will come out anything close to nice I just HATE the runs in it. (But not as much as I dislike primer) Its definitely getting a repaint I just wanted to try and tinker with it cause buying it drained all my project money for my blazer and whitelightning. Poor me right lol

Wow Im going to try the clr with a scotch pad that turned out great. I tried a little of the 3m rubbing compound on it already but it didnt do anything lol

Good thread. I've got a 70 that was mutilated by a bad white two-tone over the medium olive. Mine should be a white cab and olive body. Sure would like to get back to that.

Thank you for the link. That bus before and after is insane! Looking at the truck i think the original paint is underneath. Where there is no rattle can paint on the passenger door there is some black primer coming through. If that graffiti remover took the primer off that bus im sure it can do the same to my truck!

Lacquer thinner will take that primer off. Paint can be another story. Might work on that. You can always wet sand it off. When using stripper on body parts the first application takes it right down to factory paint, but I'd be afraid to gamble that.
