Can You Replace?

Can you replace the windshield wiper washer pump on a 1972 without having to pull if from under the dash by accessing it by dropping the instrument cluster?

In other words, can you detach the pump from the motor unit without having to take everything out?

Obliged!

Re: Can You Replace?

Good question, because I'm looking at having to do the same thing. My wiper motor works but the pump won't squirt anything.

Re: Can You Replace?

I just put a universal pump under the jug. Unplug the wire connector from the pump part of the motor & extend it out to the new pump.

You have to pull the wiper motor out to work on the pump but you don't have to pull the cluster out to get to it. It is to the right of the cluster. There are 3 small bolts that hold it in. You also have to remove the clip from the wiper arms on the outside under the cowl vent.

I agree with Wrenchbender, put an aftermarket pump on it. If you want it to work with the button on the wiper switch you will have to run a hot wire to the pump and run the ground to the contact for the button on the wiper switch.

Re: Can You Replace?

I think if you have AC you pretty much have to pull the engine and trans. Well, it's not that bad, but for an old truck... man, it's packed in there.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a positive displacement (not rotary vane) pump? The rotary ones I tried couldn't lift the fluid out of the jug to prime, they only can push fluid it appears.

Re: Can You Replace?

It's hard to fumble around up there. I put a universal pump next to my reservoir. If I remember correctly you ground from the wiper motor by intercepting the ground for the pump and wire it to universal pump ground, then pull power off fuse panel.

Re: Can You Replace?

I'm tearing everything down. Have no idea if the pump works, but once I locate it I'll give it a try. Other than the motor and switch, nothing else was hooked up when I bought this truck. I know the motor works. Is there a reliable OER pump replacement?

Well, I bought two pumps. First one was like you said, second one pumped real nice. The first one was an amazon universal... total crap. Then I went to O'reillys and chatted it up with the guy there, he sympathized and brought out some replacement pumps. I chose one and it worked fine! But if you post a better one I might swap.

But I get plenty of juice now.

Re: Can You Replace?

if I ever have to replace it again I will use a newer tank with the built in pump like I had in an 86 style I believe if I remember right it had squirters that snapped on the wiper arms about mid point on the arm coverd the window much better without the arm getting in the way of the spray . I saw someone on here had them so they should fit our arms
