Anybody know of any Portland Oregon based companies that will cut driveshafts down without charging you an arm and a leg?

I've checked a few out and their saying anywhere from $350 to $500!!! That's ridiculous! More if it's HD and even more if you want new U-joints.

The price goes up and up and up. They charge for prep, then charge for first cut, then additional charge for second cut, more charge for weld, more charge for powder coat, more charge for new U-joints, then additional cost for paint... By the time your done your well over $600!

Can I get a few names of reputable places please.

That's completely out of line. There is a place here in KC that shortens one for $60. He built me one completely out of aluminum with new U-joints for $300.

I just shortened a driveshaft for a V8 chevy S10 for a guy I know and I charged him $35
I used to get them done in phila pa. when I lived there by a driveline shop for around $50

Having a driveshaft shortened should be no where near that expensive. You should be able to get a completely new driveshaft built for $300-350. It's been years since I have had one shortened, so I don't know what the current cost is around here.

Check out LostMy65's build thread. He bought a new driveshaft for his truck and the cost wasn't that bad.

I had Anderson Brothers in Eugene work on a couple drivelines for me. Shortening one cost about $50, building a new one (I supplied the ends) cost about $125. They're a big truck repair place, maybe you can find something like it around Portland. They weren't as stuck up as some auto driveline shops around the area.

Never been to Oregon Tony, but I hear it's Reeeal Nice. If nothing else I could drop off a bed full of small block 350's for TJ.
Best of luck finding someone to do the job for you, as mentioned by everyone, this shouldn't cost a lot of hard earned money.

In my area, most everything is ridiculously expensive. The DS guy that I keep using in San Jose will build a completely new HD driveshaft for under 300 from a sketch on a piece of paper. He will use a combo of brand new and good used parts on hand. One day turn around in most cases.

There's not much to shorting a drive shaft. I watched an episode on a Hot Rod TV. They just chuck them up in a lathe, turn down the weld at the yolk, cut the drive shaft to length, slip the yolk back into the shaft weld it up and then check for balance. NOT a lot of labor time.

I think I had these guys do mine years back. Couldn't have been that expensive as I was in college. But it's possible it was another place and my memory has failed a bit in the last 5-6 years.

Yeah. Not much in it at all I don't think? Maybe instead of me looking into driveline pros I can just find a reputable shop that does more than just this. I don't know? Thanks!

Six States in Portland might be able to do it. The ones here do, but I'm not sure what they charge.

do you know anyone that can weld it if you cut it ?

I have done more than 20 at home with no lathe .
and I never had 1 balanced .

3 of the trucks I have now I cut the drive shafts .
I shortened two and
made one longer for my blue S10 yard push truck .

I shortened the one in the red n black truck with a 454

I shortened the drive shaft in my wifes 51 chevy
that is on a complete running 1985 V6 S10 chassis
that I built for her 3 years ago.

they are the first 3 trucks in the picture.

the green 97 S10 I swapped the whole running chassis wiring and the bed.
that took A 100 thousand miles off the truck ,
it had 250,000 miles now it has 150,000 miles and cruse control .

if you need any info on cutting the drive shaft yourself and having someone else weld it email me .

Grinder, welder and dial indicator and it's not too hard. There is a good video on youtube...I did my own.

I must be remembering the place wrong then, or they changed pricing since. I think I paid about $110 to have them shorten my shaft and add new Ujoints back when I did it.

I second looking into a big truck place. We used to have Bayshore International here in South City. Big Spicer dealer. They had built every driveshaft of mine until they moved. The hobby got more expensive after they left the area.
