Parking lights will not work

I am just looking for some back up here. 1979 C10. I just installed a painless harness and hooked up all the lights on the front. driver side is grounded to the fender, passenger side is grounded to the frame. Headlights and brights work. flashers and turn signals work, but no parking lights. I used my original light switch, I am guessing this is the problem. Does anybody now how to test the switch. Not looking forward to taking it out, but I have to remove my bezel to install the radio so will check then.

Rethinking this, the original lights were all connected and that's why the grounds are they way they are, mine a separated at the firewall, any chance I should ground the driver side to the frame? Neither side works

Is there any chance this has to do with the tail lights not being hooked up?

Re: Parking lights will not work

Guessing your dash lights are out as well. Check the fuse panel. Don't remember which it is, but one does control the running and dash lights, and if it is bad will cause the symptoms you have.

Re: Parking lights will not work

I checked my gauge fuse and it is good. Gauges light up. I guess I will pull my light switch out and check the wiring from the switch. And see if the switch is bad. Any other thoughts?

Re: Parking lights will not work

Hook up your tail lights and then try it.

If that doesn't work get a test light and try to figure out where your losing voltage. Some possibilities could be a bad ground, bad switch, loose connection, bad bulbs/socket, or a bad fuse.

Re: Parking lights will not work

Thanks, bulbs are new, grounds are on, checked fuse and it is good. The flashers work on the same bulbs, just not the parking lights. Will hook up tail lights

Thanks

Re: Parking lights will not work

I would check for 12v with your meter or a test light from the socket to a known good ground and work backwards...
If the switch was bad I wouldn't think your gauge lights would be on...

Chris I'm looking at the factory wiring schematic and it indicates a sheet metal ground at each tail lamp housing. I could be very wrong but IIRC the tail lamp housing to body gives you the ground path.

Re: Parking lights will not work

Do not have the tail lights hooked up yet. Just the front lights. And they have a seperate ground wire. But you know. There could be a socket ground as well. Let me look at that. Right now. Home from work due to snow

Re: Parking lights will not work

I have all tail lights including back up. Just no parking lights. Horn does not work either but that could be the button assembly.

Re: Parking lights will not work

I am in the middle of a painless wiring harness part number 10205 install on my 86. I had park lights on the first click out but when you turned the headlights on the park lights went out. Come to find out that for some reason with the Painless pre wired headlight connector, they have 2 brown wires for park lights/tail lights and they are in separate positions in the connector and I had to take 927 and hook it to the 930 wire to get the park lights to stay on in both positions of the headlight switch. Maybe thats whats going on with yours?

Anything is possible, I will check that out, if I am not mistaken the painless light plug to the switch was prewired correct? So you had to pull the wire out and just relocate it?

Simple solution

Re: Parking lights will not work

930 says the instrument panel. Did you double up the wire? It looks like it could come off a couple places and still work. Either wire 959, or dashed line, top tab on left side. That has to be the problem either way I need to pull that switch out and reconfigure the plug. Thanks for the tip
