Looking at a '79

Looking at a '79 Longbox. Pretty rusty. Box is really bad. Interior is really nice, odometer reads 202,000 Kms.

It has a 350 Vortec out of a rolled over '99 Yukon (which had 15,000 Kms on it at the time of rollover). The guy put new rings in it, new water pump, new timing chain (I think he said double roller), GMPP LT4 cam, Edelbrock Air-Gap Vortec Intake, Edelbrock 750-cfm Electric Choke carb. It has about 20,000 Kms on it in this truck.

Tranny is a Turbo 350 with a shift kit and a 2600 stall. Though you sure couldn't feel the kit or stall. Mind you, I never really got into the throttle as the engine was still cold. I noticed that the pan was leaking pretty bad so it will need to be resealed.

The carb still needs tuning, it was running rich and he said he was having trouble setting the choke.

Brakes are really good, front end feels tight, drives real nice, though it does have a hesitation at part throttle.

The guy is asking $3500 Canadian (Rough estimate $2500 U.S.) firm. The guy is about 40 years old, he's the second owner and doesn't seem like he abused the truck.

Do you guys think it's worth what he's asking?

for a good running truck, with a solid frame, and tight suspension, that doesnt sound like a totally bad deal. how bad is the cab? everything else is a pretty easy replace, the cab however could be a job.

about "never really getting on it because the engine was still cold", i have never test driven a vehicle that i didnt "abuse" a little bit on the test drive. from the sounds of it, assuming a decent rear end ratio, it should be a pretty quick truck.

I think you should do some shopping down south. That truck wouldn't sell for $1000 down here. I say shop around and get something cleaner.

It sounds like you will spend twice that amount or more trying to fix it up. Why not just get a truck that doesn't need so much? I would pass, but then I hate rusted trucks as a starting point....

The cab is starting to get pretty bad, though it still could be salvaged.

The guy said the rear end ratio is either 2.73 or 3.08.

The only thing that reall worried me is the box. It needs another box, the one that's on it is shot. A 73-87 box alone in any decent shape brings $1000 up here, so that's kinda scaring me away.

Onlh thing to me that sounds good about it is the interior and engine (other than leaks). Everything else sounds like it would cost more in the long run to get it where you would want it.

I don't know what it would cost you to get a truck across the border, but I think I would look at other options. Rust free trucks are abundant in the southern states....
