How's my weld lookin
So I bought a miller 211 for Christmas. Got the tank, got a cart, auto dimming mask, gloves, etc....
I have also started a mII build thread on my 53 here. Now I will start by saying I have never welded and did not expect to just take it outa the box and weld. I have always been good at doing things myself and thought I know with some practice, I can do this. I have read so much here and on the web about people who just start welding stuff with no clue as to what they are doing. I ran a 220 line for the Miller. At first, I was having some troubles, mainly, getting a technique and feel. After weeks of welding scraps, I can see thru the mask more of what is gapping and feel better about doing it. I may just tack in my MII and try to have someone weld it in for me, but, I like many here, really want to try and do it all myself. But, I want to be safe. I am in no hurry, and will practice more, but can some of you more experienced welders out there tell me how theses look? I appreciate any pointers or suggestions, thanks all Phil... |

Re: How's my weld lookin
Looks like your tip movement is not in an even looping pattern..it looks more like a push and pile weld.. and the second pic shows the majority of your weld on the vertical piece. In this case your tip angle needs to be at a 45 degree angle to where the horizontal and vertical piece join. Watch this video..it may help..https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=w4RrDeUKcH4 .practice practice practice

Re: How's my weld lookin
Doesnt look hot enough to me. Look how the edges of the welds arent tied into the metal enough.
You can use a bit more consistency with your travel speed too. What are you settings like? I like to use the recommended voltage and run about 10% less wire speed than what the chart says. Then travel a bit slower. You can learn how to mig weld fairly decently in a few weeks. Get a plate of steel and just run beads for a few hours straight. Turn your heat up, turn it down, turn the wire speed up, turn it down. Watch to see all the effects. Go forward, backward, switch hands. Honestly that is 90% of what I did when I took a class on how to tig weld.

Re: How's my weld lookin
Slow down your movement watch your outside edges of your puddle and turn up the heat a little, also your angle is wrong you are looking for 45 degrees and 15 degrees travel angle while pushing the puddle.

Re: How's my weld lookin
Thank you all for the reply's. I will keep practicing and post a further update. Watching videos is one thing, but I hoped some experienced welders would be able to assist by my pics, and it seems you all have. Thank you all!

Re: How's my weld lookin
try making a series of cursive lower case 'e's next time you weld... also bump the heat up a little bit...
And like others have said, just get a bunch of metal, clean it up and weld it together.... practice, practice, practice...

Re: How's my weld lookin
I looks like your travel speed is a little slow and make sure you keep a 45° gun angle and a 10°-15° travel angle (push or drag). You will get more penetration with a drag angle. And try and keep 1/2" electrode stick out. Check out weldingtipsandtricks.com there is a lot of good information there.
