700r4 pains
ok guys help me! I think im using a 73 plus rear cross member it worked with the th350 ,now I am hitting the floor with top of 700 ,headers are pointing down, hmmm on an angle ,ive reworked the cross member and have it away from the floor ,but headers still point down slightly ,this truck has been apart totally ,only thing I can think of is that I have to shim cab up to raise the trans and lift headers up ,this is a complete resto ,original engine mounts but like I said ive reworked rear and still near floor and collectors on slight angle
Any ideas trans oil pan visually is lined up with frame rail ??????? |

Re: 700r4 pains
The 700r4 is a bigger body trans than the TH350 was... If you have a short hump in the floor you may need to get a high hump... and then change carpet, ect, ect...

Re: 700r4 pains
You have drive line angles to think about... if the motor and trans are at too much of an angle, youre gonna have issues...

Re: 700r4 pains
I "had" a 700r4 in my truck with a BB and a low hump floor and didn't have any problems. I built my own transmission crossmember after I got the engine and transmission where I wanted it, but I did have enough room under the cab. The reason I wanted to see a pic of the headers is to see if they turned down somewhat, if that's the case they won't be parallel with the frame.

Re: 700r4 pains
I put a 700 R4 in my shortbed, didn't have any weird angles to deal with at all.using stock small block mounts and perches, even used a stock 700R4 tranws mount too.my truck originally had a long tail shaft 350 turbo in it, (with the factory cross member) I did have to shorten the drive shaft though. Was your truck an automatic or stick? Just wondering if the cross member might be different or the mount....

Re: 700r4 pains
ya all different it was 3 spd ,cut that cross out last weekend and then figured out 30 yrs ago I put 73 rear cross in and that worked with th350 but not 700 all angles are good just my headers different angle but can accommodate them ,I reworked 73 cross member and it all sits well ,now just gotta crry on ,it was supposed to be a stress reliever , now its turned into obsession .
I built one of these in early 80s ,a 1967 gmc ,looked exactly the same but stayed with 3 spd and modified complete front hood tilt |

Re: 700r4 pains
Tilt front end huh? Man, that must have been some undertaking to get done! I thought a complete cab rear brace was an accomplishment!!! Wow!

Re: 700r4 pains
I've been plugging away at my build since July 2013....and mine was purchased as a "Basket Case" I bought it from a guy who started the project, he completely disassembled it, bought a
'70 parts truck and got a bunch of new patch panels and lots of parts to boot. After I got the rockers and cab corners done on that cab, I couldn't get to doors to align, even with a porta-power.....ended up getting a '72 cab. Turns out, the original chassis had a crappy repair done to it, had angle iron welded to the frame rail, bird crap welds,etc....couldn't use that chassis, but the P.O. I bought it from knew that and gave me a straight 67 SWB chassis. Apparently, somebody rear ended another vehicle, the truck got rear ended, pushed the Bed into the cab and distorted it pretty badly. I've come a long ways and almost ready to fire it for the first time.....yeah! Ben |
