Pneumatic Tilt Front end?
I saw the pneumatic fuel filler door Slammed67 posted on the other board and it got me thinking. Could I use air to lift my tilt front end? I am going to do a steel tilt instead of the fiberglass. I'm afraid that the electric actuators that would be needed to do the job might be kinda expensive...
I found these cylinders... I might not sure what size i would need to get. I think I know what kind...just not the bore size air cylinders Anybody know anything about this? |

I cant help too much on cyl selection, but will say that if the "balance" is set up properly on the hinge, it shouldnt take too big a cyl to open that clip. the clip on my longhorn is 'armstrong"......I can lift it with 1 hand. The 1st ft up feels a little heavy, but after that it just floats up easy. I have hood pins /retainers between the 2 fender halves holding it closed. so I wanted a little weight to start the lift.....lots of wind under that booger at higher hyway speeds

Try this catalog they have all the specs and I have been using a 2 1/2 " cylinder with 24" throw it will move 650 lbs at 150 psi. you might need a smaller cyl for a tilt and use a restricter in the inlet to slow down the speed air cyl move real quick lol.

Thanks for the replies. I am getting the picture... air may not be the route to go. if it is that light then I can use a single electric actuator.
Hey Crazy, Can you send me some pictures of your set up? darrylb@weissereng.com they would be much appreciated. |

I dont have any shots of the hinges, but there are a few shots of the clip.... http://community.webshots.com/user/hotrodhorn not real good shots of the internals, but you will see a little of the bracework. Its a little overkill, but the clip doesnt "dance" in the wind. crazyL

do a search on ebay for "Bimba cylinders" ... some of the best stuff out there in pneumatics ... last time I checked, there were several listings for them.
