Re: matched key sets

I took a door lock to a locksmith to make a key off the number on the lock. they didn't and couldn't find any info from the lock from the 60s, for $50.00 they would install a new tumbler in my old lock and I didn't want to go that route so I bought a complete lock set off LocDoc, they look and work great...

Re: matched key sets

OK, dumb question. Are we supposed to have two keys? My door key also fits my ignition (square key). I seem to recall one square key and one round key, but I thought that was for newer trucks.

I would have tried another locksmith for more reputable and I have bought a lot of trucks without keys pulled the door lock out got the number code off the door lock have a cut him over the phone and pick up the keys and they fit the ignition I guess it just depends on what kind of schooling and programming they have

These trucks came with only one key (actually 2, but the same). They were all square.

Good point! I forgot that 50s and 60s GM keys were octagonal or round until 68 or 69. Vehicles that had separate door keys had round heads for the doors and trunk.

Incidentally, I still have the 2 originals and the knock out from one with the key/lock number.

Ok, that's what I remembered. Thanks! I remember the octagon ones too.

Seems like we came full circle. New trucks come with one key again. (2, but the same). I knew I was ahead of my time.

Re: matched key sets

I took my door key and my ignition to a local locksmith, he redid the ignition to match the doors. I think it cost around $25.

Re: matched key sets

I got 2 off brand keys with my '72, both fit the ignition and the doors. Went to the local GM dealer and had them cut 2 GM keys from the ones I had. They work in the ignition but not the doors. Then I took them all to the hardware store and had them "touch up" the new ones. Still didn't work in the doors. Next I went to one of the local locksmiths. He said I should have come to him first cause he is an old guy from back in the day. He compared the keys I had and couldn't see any difference between them. He didn't have GM blanks so he cut an aftermarket blank. Same thing, works in the ignition but not the doors. Anybody got any suggestions? locdoc?

Re: matched key sets

that one key for multible trucks is a great idea.

if i find a truck in the jy with keys i usually take the locks and ign.
my 71k20 didnt come with keys but i had some sets to replace them all so i opted too drill out the ing. ..what a pita.

when i tore down my 67 i found another briggs key taped to the bottom of the washer bottle bracket it looked like it was never used...i thought that was a good idea

Did you spray some lubricant into the door lock cylinders? Preferably something with Teflon in it. Stick the nozzle inside the lock cylinder and give it a couple of good sprays, then put the key in that works and rotate the key from side to side to lock & unlock it a few times. That will get the lubricant worked in, then try the other keys again. Also check to see how far the original keys go into the lock. Check and make sure the new keys slide in the same amount as the originals. They may not be sliding in all the way and you may have to wiggle them up and down while pushing in on them..

Sometimes the wafers can hang up in the lock from not being used.

Let me know if none of that helps....

Thanks LockDoc I will try that tomorrow. I tried WD-40 in a similar fashion but will try the Teflon stuff and check it out closer. I also sent the previous owner a message to see if he has original keys. Waiting to hear from him.
I appreciate your input!

We stock Ignition & door lock sets keyed the same on
Ignition, Door
or
Ignition, Door & Glove Box
So that the same key that starts the truck also unlocks the doors & glove box, We also have these for the Suburban with rear barn doors that include the Ignition, Front Side Door locks & Rear Barn Door Locks all keyed the same.
Because we also got fed up with having 23 different keys for all our different 1967-72's we also began having made multiple sets keyed alike back in Dec. 2015.
So for those with more than 1 truck we also can now provide multiple Ignition, Door Lock sets all keyed the same so that if you order our multi-keyed alike sets for 2 or more trucks all the sets you order at 1 time all come keyed alike so if you buy 3 sets any key from the 3 sets will now operate all your 1967-72 ignition & door locks in those 3 sets.
You'll find these on the following page of our web site.
http://www.gmcpauls.com/lock_sets11.htm
Available as 1967-68 with GM original octagon shaped key heads or available for 67-72 with square head original GM keys. 67-68 Octagon key head sets can be used on 69-72 also, and the square head key design used from 69-72 can be used on 67-68 also as they are interchangeable.
