Will not go into gear

I have a 3 speed Saginaw in my 66 and I tried to put in gear this morning and it just grinds with the clutch in. It was fine when I pulled it in the garage last night. I checked all the linkage and everything looks good and springs are intact. Any thoughts?

Re: Will not go into gear

Does it go into any gear (1st, 2nd, 3rd, rev) while not moving?

Remove the dust/inspection cover under the tranny and have someone step on the clutch while you observe if you notice anything not moving right.

Re: Will not go into gear

What happens when you place the trans in gear (clutch pedal depressed) and then start it?

On my blue corvette, occasionally, the clutch disc sticks to the flywheel.

Re: Will not go into gear

First I have to get it out of the garage.

It will go into all gears if the engine is off but if running it grinds.

When I get home today I will push it out and try to start it with the clutch in and in gear. Coil wire removed so I don't crash into anything! lol

I have a feeling the pressure plate teeth are shot. I have had a shutter when taking off since I got the truck 5 years ago even though I had the flywheel resurfaced.

Possibly new clutch, pressure plate, and flywheel?

Re: Will not go into gear

Yeah, it sounds like the clutch is not releasing. You won't be able to start it with coil cable removed and probably don't need to push it anyway. You probably have figured you'll have to remove the transmission and dig into it but you should be able to see what's happening from underneath with the dust/inspection cover removed. (not while running of course -- )

Re: Will not go into gear

So I got it out of the garage, put in in 1st and started it up. It will move if I give it gas but acts like the clutch is slipping and it wont shift out of that gear with the pedal depressed.

Re: Will not go into gear

Good indication the clutch or pressure plate are gone. As you mentioned above the best thing to do is to go with a good brand clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing -and possibly the flywheel if it looks burned or has stress fractures from over heating.

Make sure you get the right throwout bearing since there different types. Keep the old one until you get the replacement to make sure it's the same size.
