47-54 gauge questions 6 cyl/8 cyl differences?
Ok I'm looking at the classic parts catalog and noticed that they have difference temp gauges depending if it's a v8 or a i6. I have a 54 Chevy 235 motor but I want to keep my options open down the road of its not rebuildable to throw in a crate 350.
Replacing my oil pressure to 60 lbs is a no brainer. Battery gauge should be easy? I converted to 12 volts. My fuel gauge is another issue. I have a extra c10 tank with a new sender collecting dust in the garage so I gotta research if I can find a stock gauge with 90ohm range. I have my old gauges and saw you can get a sticker to give them a facelift but with all these changes I might as well get a whole new set maybe. Appreciate your help

The V8 temp gauge just has a longer tube to reach the cylinder head, the 6 is too short. The battery gauge is an ammeter, it doesn't care if you use 6v or 12.

There was a recent thread on the s10 sender/original gauge issue, it requires adding a resistor parallel in the circuit. Here is a link to a search thread on the topic.

Re: 47-54 gauge questions 6 cyl/8 cyl differences?
pre 55 never had the v8 from factory, finding 47-54 v8 parts non-existent
ammeter: bypass it, the ammeter is 30 amp for a generator, most any alternator will be 100 amp or more oil pressure: most of us just jun the oil pressure gauge pegged gas gauge: someone just posted the how to, using a diode to convert 30 to 90 do a little looking around or maybe someone can post a link

They make a V8 gauge for retrofits.

Re: 47-54 gauge questions 6 cyl/8 cyl differences?
Ok thanks for the comments so can I use a "v8" temp sender for a straight six?

Re: 47-54 gauge questions 6 cyl/8 cyl differences?
Yes, you can. You understand that the gauge and sending tube are all one piece? You can not separate the two. You can coil up the extra tubing behind the engine if you don't need it.
