Question 700R4 speedometer question?

Ok you guys with the 700R4s or 2004Rs? How do you connect the speedometer up to the
overdrive trannies? If I'm not mistaken, they all have an electric speedometer outputs, right?

I'd really like to have an overdrive, but if I have to spend $300 dollars for a computer to read my
speed, I'll have to rethink this. I want to keep the original mechanical speedometer.

I've searched all 35 pages of posts here but couldn't find any information about how to
handle this issue, except for the $300 dollar computer. But I've thought I'd seen some type
of a converter mentioned before.

Ive got a 1983 model 700r4 and i dont have the electonic you are talking about. I did have to go with a longer cable though. I had a th350 and swapped it out to 700r4, and had to change driveshaft lenght as well. I like mine lots,

Thanks for the link for the kit. That will be better than the $300 kit I was looking at.

I had been looking at '87 and newer trannies for their stronger internal parts. But I guess I
could go pre '87 and get a mechanical drive tranny. It's not like I am going to be racing
with my 2ton 300hp truck.

I don't remember what year the 700 in my Studebaker or my Longhorn are, but the cable was fine. They had to change the gear to get me right on MPH, but it's within 1 MPH now. As far as the age, that doesn't seem to matter. They put some 4L65 guts in mine when they built it, cause they know I pull my car trailer and water trailer with it.

My 700R4 is newer than '87 and it has the mechanical speedo gear.

I believe all 700r4's are cable driven and went electronic (VSS) when they switched to the 470le (or whatever its called) tranny in 1993 or so.

I put in a 700r4 out of a 92 s10 pickup that was not computer controlled but did have an electronic speedometer.

You can change the electonic speedometer sending unit to a mechanical cable type real easy. They will interchange without any modifications, all you have to do is:

1. Remove the rear tailshaft housing from the transmission.
2. Slide the "gear" off of the transmission tail shaft. I think it
is held on by a clip or it is lightly pressed on, I don't
remember
3. Remove the electionic speedometer parts from the tail
shaft housing.
4. Install the mechanical speedometer parts (from an earlier
transmission)
into the tail shaft housing.
5. Install the right "gear set" for your rear end and tires.
6. Reinstall the rear tailshft housing.
7. Connect you speedometer cable. (on mine the cable was
not long enough)

I went to a transmission shop and they swapped with me even. My electionic speedomenter sending unit for a mechanical cable unit.

I was told you want a tranny newer than 87 due to the mods that were made after all the problems suffered earlyer. I bought a rebuilt tranny from Bowtie overdrives for around $900.00 already geared to my rearend and tire size. I think 92 was the last year that could run mechanical speedo. Mine works great, I highly reccomend the 700r.

Cole, where you at in AZ? I love my 700R4. I'm getting ready to swap out the rear end for a newer on with 3:42ish gearing. Just picked up the donor rear. ThenI'll be able to do the freeway shuffle!

I used a 700 from a 91 caprice. It had the electric spedo. I removed the electrical pick up and simply replaced it with one from a BOP turbo 350. If you need, I can get pics. Let me know. Extremelly cheap and simple.
