Question To Posi or not to Posi?

I have heard that getting a Posi unit for my truck would be a good thing, but are there any cons? How hard would it be to change it from what I have, whats involved? will I have to get new axels and gearing or just the posi unit? Is it somthing that I can read my book and learn how to do or should I make sure somone is there that really knows what they are doing? Im not sure what I have right now I know its not posi, but am not totaly sure on the gears. I think that they are 3.73 I have a 70 chevy that I think came with a manual 292?

I think you better figure out what you have and what you don't then move to the next step.

I would leave the changeover to someone who knows what they're doing. If a gear is not set up correctly you can ruin it quick, the ring gear must be spaced correctly from the pinion gear or it will wear out prematurely. Oh and I have a posi and I wouldnt have anything else, but mine came from the factory with one.

I just installed an eaton posi a few weeks ago. You need to figure out what gears you have as it will determine which differential you'll need (series 3 or 4). I used my stock gears. I suppose I was lucky. I checked the backlash before, then installed the posi, and it was the same, and the wear pattern looked the same, so it was pretty easy.
