Fan & Pully original Shim? Order?
Last question for the day guys,
Today I was going to clean and paint the fan and pulley from my 59 six cylinder 3100, so I removed them. As I took off the pulley, a "shim" fell out which was located between the blade and pulley (you can see it in a few of the pictures). However, the shim seems to also fit inside the pulley too, so I'm not sure where the "shim" is supposed to be? Since I got the truck last fall, I've been fixing lots of issues the previous owner supposedly "fixed". Not sure if he installed the "shim" in the right place or not? So, can anyone tell me where this factory looking "shim" is supposed to be located? Additionally, why is it there at all? Right now my pulley is VERY close to the water pump outlet. I assume the shim is there to somehow align the pulleys? How do I test to see if pulleys are aligned before the belt goes on? Sorry about the size.....don't know how to shrink pictures. Thanks Tod Last edited by 63 & 64 Bowties; 03-16-2016 at 03:21 PM. |

From what i understand it isn't a shim, it is support of sorts for the pulley and is supposed to go between the pulley and the pump. No telling if it was inside or outside of the pulley before.

Re: Fan & Pully original Shim? Order?
agreed ^^^ a strain relief/reinforcement to keep the pulley from breaking around the water pump flange

Thanks guys. After your postings, I looked in the manual and found a page that showed where the support went. Fixed it today the right way. It was tough to do with the radiator still in, but I got it.

A bit late but when the shim is in the right spot the pullys will be perfectly lined up or at least should be.
