I went and took a look at my tailgate, and found a fresh dent in the stainless trim band. It's a fresh one to, looks fishy because of the kind of dent it is. A sharp pointed object would have been my best guess. Bummer. I think I can get it out, the a bunch of wet sanding and polishing.

Not anywhere near show quality but you can use a 80's era tailgate on a 75 bed if you get all of the mounting hardware. The newer tan painted hinge part is from the 80's donor. While the mounting hardware changed between the years, I don't think the bolt holes changed. This tailgate was a $30 find at the local Pull-A-Part, mounting hardware included.
