What is this joint on the driveshaft?

What's up guys -

Still trying to replace my U-Joints and carrier bearing. Tried to get my carrier bearing off and it isn't working too well. I think I stripped the threads on this part while trying to get the carrier bearing off. What is the name of this joint on the driveshaft with the thread that holds the carrier bearing in place? It might have to be replaced if the threads are damaged and it can't be re-threaded.

Also, what is a good way to get the carrier bearing off? I tried with a 3 piece puller, but it obviously did not go so well.

mine was a PITA too. I used a puller and did some minor damage to the threads too, however I was able to clean them up with a tap. Then I used a big thick washer to protect the threads and used the puller again and it worked. If yours is seized really bad you could use a small torch and try some heat as well.

Where you at in nor cal? drive line service in san leandro ca will fix you up not tooo expensive

Thanks for the reply. That's not a bad idea using a large washer. Did your puller actually thread into joint? I think thats where I went wrong. The puller I used was one size to big so I didn't think it'd force itself in there, I got too distracted with getting the damn bearing off..stuff happens...

Did you attach the puller to the end of the bearing on? Mine didn't budge a bit, I just might have to use a torch like you suggested.

Nice, I'm in San Jose; Not too far. Do you think they can fix up the threads if I can't do anything about them? Worse comes to worse if I throw in the towel it's good to know there is a decent shop around.

Not to take anything away from Driveline Service, but if you're in San Jo, look up Driveline Specialties. I think its on Alma. Steve has built a dozen or so shafts for me over the years. Fast, reasonable and professional.

My puller didn't thread in, it kinda...smashed in a bit before I realized what was going on. But again I was able to stop and save the threads.
I think I got the puller on the yolk, and once the yolk came of the splines the bearing slid right off.

Maybe also try soaking the splines in PB Blaster or something similar.

I assume there was bolt and washer on that was removed YES?..... When using a puller you replace the bolt (less washer) and push against it so you DON'T F-up the threads

It's funny you say that, I was going to try Driveline Specialties, but it's very much out of my way and only open m-f so I'd be in a bunch of traffic so I ended up looking them up right before I got onto the forum today. Thanks!

I will try that out. I was trying to pull from the corners of the bearing. I did the same thing as you. It smashed in the first thread a bit. Hopefully I can have a shop rethread them; it's not absolutely terrible, just enough to get me down for a couple days not wanting to work on the truck due to my own stupidity.

I just went through the drama of the carrier bearing woes. I decided to go with a new single piece drive shaft, brand new with 3.5" dom steel out the door for $216. Anyways that part is called an end yoke. It mounts on what is called the mid ship spline/shaft.
