4 Speed Shifter Question On My '64

Wondering what the deal is with the 2 tabs at the base of my shifter on my '64, almost appear to be lined up like they should be somehow connected, but both are fixed positions. What are they there for?

That is for the original style back up light switch. There was a round plunger style switch that went in the hole on the bottom and the tab on the shifter shaft depressed the switch when shifted into reverse.
