Re: windshield replacement
I've not done it myself but I watched it being done twice to my 95 Suburban. Myself, I would not attempt it. Why? One, you need the right tools, thus a cost there. Second, if you crack it, it is wasted. First time ever probably means a good chance to crack it. Third, you'd have to invest in the material to install it. Fourth, if you made any errors it would leak or not be structurally intact in an accident.
But if you really want to learn to do it, go for it. |

Re: windshield replacement
Thanks for the reply. My idea was to take it out ,but let the glass shop install it. The lack of info I have found on removel, tells me its a tougher job than I first thought.

Re: windshield replacement
Yep, I've busted a few myself. Its a bigger job than you'd think. I shopped around and got the whole job done for under $200, closer to 140 IIRC, new glass, all removal, installation, and a guarantee.

Re: windshield replacement
I have cut them out before with a wire and some wood dowels for handles. If really careful you might have 50% chance of success. Having two people helps. They make electric tools to cut them out also but you have more like a 90% chance of braking it.

Re: windshield replacement
I'd let a glass shop install a new windshield. Plus, you may want to check with the glass shop first, I doubt most would install a used windshield.
As others have mentioned, you need the right tools, by the time you pay for the right tools.........

Re: windshield replacement
Thanks guys, I think I will just buy a new one. It is a big job without the right tools, and still a chance it could break taking it out. Its my son's truck and I want to be as safe as I can be.
