Intermediate Shaft boot
Hello.
I've been searching and searching and cannot locate a source to purchase a new intermediate shaft boot kit for my 1980 K20. I found info on this forum suggesting that the Jeep kit works but it is a bit small (boot diameter) and a little different. There was not clamp included either. Does anyone know of a source for these? Thank you, Lawrence F. |

Re: Intermediate Shaft boot
Should be the same for all GM columns check with NPD OPGI or Inline Tube you may need to look at Car catalogs to find it.

Re: Intermediate Shaft boot
I tried to find one and had no luck. I tried a Chevy dealer and they told me it was discontinued for at least the last 10 years.

Re: Intermediate Shaft boot
This one matches the one on my truck but the ad says it's for 64-79 Buick (and others). So, someone must have swapped an intermediate shaft from a different GM vehicle into my truck. I don't know.

Re: Intermediate Shaft boot
I heard that early chavelles used the same Shafts but could never confirm. I also saw someone one here use a jeep boot. Not sure what year.

Re: Intermediate Shaft boot
Yeah, the eBay site says it fits Chevelles. I'll let you all know what I find out when it arrives.
It doesn't come with the clamp (goes on the part of boot protruding inward) so I'm going to zip tie it. --Lawrence F. |

This is what it looks like pop out upper housing. 73-90 should work I have not found any yet. but I have used a good used one if its not ripped/ missing chunk or split should be ok Do not forget to re-grease the cover ( using needle grease tip from the top ) This center hole to put grease in. you want it about between 1/2 to 3/4 full . It looks like it may be the one. hard to tell the truck one stretches a bit when it full of grease the rubber seal should just be a little pushed out @ bottom it should not stick out to far pass the cover. ( the center area of the seal is ok as long as it not super hard ( stuffed with grease down there)

Re: Intermediate Shaft boot
Pontiac1976 -- thanks for the pics and info!
The new boot arrived yesterday. It is the correct shape but once again the diameter of the boot's base is smaller than the coupler opening -- so much so that grease would seep out near the areas the boot doesn't cover. The original boot fits snugly in the coupler opening -- no slop whatsoever. What is the deal? Could my couple have come from a different manufacturer? (ie, not GM original part?) tommy217xxx, I think this confirms that the Chevelle part will not fit our trucks. I may need to improvise using one of the incorrectly sized boots. --Lawrence F. This might work not OEM. This may need clamp lower side hold it in place. It does look longer then the one you got, if upper round part is same size might be good replacement for dry out or ripped seals. If you can get them to give you sizes. Let us know.

Re: Intermediate Shaft boot
The Saginaw steering boxes and shafts were used on a bunch of GM, Chrysler, and AMC vehicles.
Suppliers engage in keyword spamming. Jeep, Chevelle, Impala, ... are likely not the only vehicles these boots fit. They are popular models and nameplates so they prominently feature them in their descriptions to drive search engine traffic. If the "Chevelle" part fit one CK truck it's likely it will fit most of em.

Re: Intermediate Shaft boot
Remember to prioritize your battles. After spending hours researching that boot, and ordering several wrong ones and returning them, you could have just bought a new Jeep Cherokee shaft instead.
If you're going for a perfect restoration, then by all means, chase down the correct boot. But if a good driving truck that looks neat is your primary concern, then do the Jeep shaft upgrade to eliminate the rag joint, and solve the boot problem at the same time.

Re: Intermediate Shaft boot
Or you could go to the wrecking yard and find a fullsize savana van around 96 97 and you will find the steering shaft all incased in a boot cut that off and remove whole shaft for its a direct fit other than a notch at top by the cinch bolt and has u-joints instead of rags. I covered this on my thread about half way through.
