The mother of all stupid questions! Ignition switch hole?
Hey guys! I got a build going over on the "pre 47" side but it's kind of slow over there. So I figured I would ask here. I am in the process of installing the ignition switch into the dash and I need to drill the hole.
Question is do I need to make the hole with the one side straight to keep the mechanism from spinning in the dash when I key the unit? If so how the hell do I make the hole? If I just drill a regular hole will the tightened nut be enough to keep the mechanism from spinning? I have never seen a drill bit with one flat side. Heres a pic of the switch I got from American Autowire........... [/URL] |

Or drill a smaller hole to start and carefully carve it out to fit with a die grinder and a small diameter bur.

What a pain in the @$%#!!!! Is there a better (different) switch I can buy? Maybe I'' just go and buy a half million dollar stamping machine and spend another 75K on the right size die.

Re: The mother of all stupid questions! Ignition switch hole?
I would just drill the correct size hole and tighten it down good, worked good for me on my '46.

Turns out the local hardware store had the $500,000 dollar stamping machine and Home depot had the $75,000 die.

Re: The mother of all stupid questions! Ignition switch hole?
I'd say he drilled a smaller hole and did some very neat and tidy work with a couple of files or a dremal tool. Dang nice work no matter how he did it and that switch will never turn in the hole like all too many do in round
