New to me 67 C50

I Just purchased this truck and drove it home. I drove about 18 miles and used
15+gallons of gasoline. It runs ruff and feels like the governor is stuck or something there is no power at all. And it won't go over 20mph.
Any ideas or suggestions would be awesome.
Thanks in advance.

The first thing is visibly confirm the choke will open and is open when warm, then with the truck idling see if it has any vacuum leaks and is hitting on all cylinders. What motor is it?

Thanks For the reply. It appears that the choke dose t work at all. This motor has the governor on it and now I have no spark engine won't start. I reomoved the 2g Carburator and it has some problems. All fasteners were / are loose. Gaskets are torn like someone has tried to work on it and put the used gaskets back in place. I have another fm 2g carb but the bolt pattern on the base is to large and it won't bolt to the manifold. Also the inside of the distributor is a mess rusty and cruddy. I am amazed it even ran in the first place. Is the governor necessary? Can I remove it ? If so what is involved?

The first thing I did is pull the stock intake, carb and dist. My '56 uses a 4 bbl holley, sp2p intake and ignitor II ignition. Works amazing. You never said what motor.

Re: New to me 67 C50

I am assuming it is a 350 small block but not 100% sure as I can not read the block numbers. I am trying to figure out if it is a tall deck motor or not and I am not sure how to do this easily.

Oh, and pretty sure '68 first year for 350 and last year for 327 and it's a one year only large journal motor.

Re: New to me 67 C50

So there are no tall deck small blocks? and it must be a 327 then correct? is there any other way to tell? Can I put any small block Chevy intake manifold on this motor? I have a 4 barrel high rise manifold off an early 327 that I use to run on a 350 motor years ago. I have another large base 2g carb with an adapter for that setup. I also have a HEI dist but I have been reading the oil pumps are different is this true on the 327 engine or do you know?
Thanks for all your info.

Several ways to tell a 327 from 350 but best to search in on the internet. Don't use a highrise on a big truck, use something as lowrise as possible for torque. Hei will work great if you have the fire wall clearance.

Re: New to me 67 C50

Agree on using something "lower-rise" for an intake manifold, hard to go wrong with a simple, $50 Edelbrock Performer. Regarding 327 vs. 350, look and see if your harmonic balancer is retained with a center bolt or is it just pressed on? In the top-rear of the engine, just behind the distributor, is there an appx. 1 1/16" boss/port/opening (on the same plane as the distributor opening), either plugged with a freeze plug or still featuring the little PCV "road draft tube" spigot/hose, a.k.a. crankcase pressure just exits down onto the center of the highway lane as you drive. Also, get the block casting number, found on the rear bellhousing flange, can be reached from the top if you've got stretchy arms and/or a mirror-lit-with-a-flashlight. Check the # against the internet and you should get a pretty definitive answer (although over the years, these big trucks were just "tools/machinery", so a replacement 'crate' 350cid could very easily been swapped in). Good luck!

I'll see if I can find some pic's for reference (also, don't worry if you can't actually SEE the block casting number, just use some paper/putty/aluminum foil in one hand, press it and get an "imprint", should be fine):

I have the port and tube by the Distributor. The engine is so dirty I can not see the numbers, I have pressure washed it and used a bunch of degreaser with not much luck. I have replaced the dist. with an HEI unit I am waiting for plug wires and a coil. The peks of living 25 miles from town lol.

On your HEI, don't use the factory coil wire. Run a wire from the cap to 1 of these places. 1: the terminal on the back of the starter switch on the dash. 2: to a convenient power on when key is on power source. That way you get the full 12 volts. I think you will appreciate the HEI.
