Problem shifting, keeps binding up

I just replaced the upper bearing on my steering shaft. But once I got the steering wheel back on, my 3 on the tree binds up when I try to shift it into reverse and 1st. I have to lift the hood and go push back the 1st and 2nd lever back down...It's almost like it worked better when I had the worn out bearing on it. I just got the 63 shop manual but it doesn't really explain much about this, unless I'm not looking right. If anyone has more experience with the 3 speed please share some light, thank you !

Re: Problem shifting, keeps binding up

Thank you for all of the helpful links..... I still one problem I can't figure out. When I attempt to go into 2nd and reverse, I noticed that the selector doesn't move. It just want to stay on the 1st and reverse leave. Why is that?

Re: Problem shifting, keeps binding up

So here is the problem I have. The shifting Houston. Maxes out when it butts up against the round washer/Mast. Seems like when I push forward towards the dash to grab the 2nd/3rd gear. The housing butts up like I said and won't allow me to move the shaft that handles the selector at the bottom. This doesn't make sense to me, it work fine before I took off the steering wheel. I have all the hardware all together and made sure that I put everything back right.... I'm not sure if there is something I am missing.

Re: Problem shifting, keeps binding up

I know it's hard to see but, at the end, that's where it stops agains that round washer that also bolts on the bottom, do I have it backwards and have to flip it around so that it sits further in the shaft? Because where it bolts down, it sits off set.
