Pulling Steering Wheel

Any tips/tricks to pulling the steering wheel to get to the turn signal guts on a 65 GMC? I bought the specific switch but I don't want to mess up the horn button...how do I pull that? Thanks for any info on the repair - should I pull the whole column?

Re: Pulling Steering Wheel

Just pull on the horn button. It's a rubber ring that holds it in place.

Then use a steering wheel puller. Beg Borrow or steal one.
Neighbor ended up in the hospital when he yanked it off the shaft slit his head open above the eye. It was funny afterwards but not when it happened.

Re: Pulling Steering Wheel

Awesome thanks so much. I should have a puller somewhere here. I've pulled almost every airbag wheel I have owned but I could care less about hurting something new!

Re: Pulling Steering Wheel

Well the wheel came off with a puller. The stock switch was in there good...as I was tapping it off an ear on the stock switch broke. I think to myself - no problem you have a replacement. Well the replacement from restoration part source is the 100% wrong part. Not sure if they sent me the wrong part or what but the box said 64-66 Chevy Truck and I have a 65 GMC. I don't think they use the same switch. Nonetheless, steering column isn't back together until I find a switch...any leads on one that will fit a 65 GMC or NOS would be awesome.

EDIT: this is the part they sent me and it does not line up at all: http://restorationpartssource.com/st..._moreinfo.html

Well how about this one. Looks like it is close to the one they sent you.

That looks like the one they sent and the one I have - the bolt holes and such are the issue with mine. Any idea if Chevy and GMC for the same year work? I see the NOS one in the for sale section but it just says GM.

Thanks! Do you have the part numbers you used on your truck?

EDIT: are these the two parts from classic parts that you used: 53-507A switch and 76-813 bearing?

Re: Pulling Steering Wheel

BigSix:
Your GMC should have the same switch as a 1963 Chevy.

Quality on the aftermarket switches isn't as good as your original. Before you order another one, you should try to take your original apart and see if you can repair it. Mine had one broken wire that I could resolder. I ended up trashing an aftermarket switch, repairing my original and reinstalling it after about a year.

Thank you! Also just noticed you are in MD! If you need anything GMC related let me know - I'd love to meet up when your knee is back in order.

Thanks Steve,

Mine broke an ear and was fractured when I removed it. I will keep an eye out for an original switch but for now I just need to get this aftermarket one in there so I have an upper column bearing and can drive her.

ALSO: What torque on the steering wheel nut? Don't want it too tight I assume since that upper bearing is so small.

Re: Pulling Steering Wheel

I just tighten mine the old school way with a ratchet and socket.

Thanks. Ever since I picked up that Makita brushless impact a couple years ago I need to watch myself. Sounds like this is a place for just getting it snug by hand.

Re: Pulling Steering Wheel

For what ever reason I can not get my steering put back on straight so just by using a ratchet and socket I still need a puller to get it back off.

Re: Pulling Steering Wheel

910853 is the original part number in the Canadian Parts Book 62-70. Fits 64-69 Chevrolet and Gmc. If you Google the part number there are a few vendors.
Is there any part number cast in your old switch?

The 63 switch which was one year only.
