Tranny ID help

I am trying to find out what model and year my 3 speed in my 55 is. It is not the original trans. I know it is a muncie by comparing it with pictures on the net. casting number on right side of case is 3911982, the last 3 might be 882 the eight and nine look about the same. Any body out there got any books on these?

C 17 ? March 17 of what ever year the last digit is, should be 5 if original to the truck.

If a 3 speed how many bolts on the side cover?

Re: Tranny ID help

Its a Mid 60's Saginaw HD 3 speed. They used it behind 396 and others of that era in Camaro's and chevelles

Re: Tranny ID help

I have not been able to find that PN, but the 8 could indicate 1968 or 58. I did find that in 1966 1st gear became synchronized so you could shift into first gear without double clutching or coming to a complete stop. If it is the HD model will have an 1.125" input shaft. Stout unit, used in roundy car racing.

I don't know if anything's changed, but those transmissions were tough to find parts for back in the '80s. I'm thinking it will be tougher now...

Re: Tranny ID help

Good thing is they don't need parts too often unless you really abuse them. I've got one in my 48 that has been trouble free for a lot of miles.

Re: Tranny ID help

Those parts shouldn't be too hard to find. IIRC they're similar to Saginaw 4 spd parts.

Re: Tranny ID help

I'd try Garage Motorsports, Vancouver, WA for your parts. They have a lot of trans. parts, ask for a guy named Mike, very helpful and knowledgeable. Web search their name and it will come right up. Good Luck.

Re: Tranny ID help

This is a great forum. I can't offer any assistance but did get one of my questions answered. It looks like you can use a transmission like this where there is no rear mount. I want to find an all syncro three speed but was concerned about only mounting it with the four bolts in the front. It looks like that is how Virginian's is mounted so apparently it is OK to do it. Excuse the "sidetrack".

Re: Tranny ID help

A cast iron case & cast iron bell housing will work with the four bolts on the case
My Tremac is mounted to a cast iron bell housing with just the 4 case bolts
