frame vin decoding
I purchased a 72 shortbed a few months ago. The seller said the cab came from a 72 c10 longed but the original short frame was from a 68. I recently had a friend over that said the frame is from a 66. The numbers located on the frame on the drivers side just pass the core support are as follows
0143169 or O143169 I can't quite tell if the first character is a letter O or a zero. The 9 at the end I am 75% sure its a 9. If anyone could help me decode the number I would greatly appreciate it. I was just about to start ordering porter built suspension parts and if this is not a 67-72 frame, I will have to locate one before moving forward.

Re: frame vin decoding
If anyone has a link where I can decode it myself I would greatly appreciate it.

Re: frame vin decoding
Not a lot of decoding is possible. From memory, I don't think you can get the year of the frame from the partial VIN. You can get the plant letter code, but the numbers are just a portion of the original VIN. From yours I am assuming Oshawa plant

Re: frame vin decoding
Thanks geunther, I've seen posts where meters stated the number before the letter was the year but there is no number before the letter on this frame.

Re: frame vin decoding
Not sure about all of them, but mine appears to be like yours, it starts with the plant code (B in my case) then six numerical digits (VIN sequence number).

Re: frame vin decoding
Thank you, that seems to be the case with mine. I'm curious as to if there is another way to tell. I'm planning on doing a porterbuilt suspension and I need to know going forward that my frame is a 67-72 frame.

Re: frame vin decoding
What was your friend's reasoning for believing it was from a 66? Can you post a picture of your rear cab mount(s). There are some slight differences that maybe we can see.

Re: frame vin decoding
He mentioned that the front of the frame rails were different than that of a 67-72 frame. I'll try to figure out how to post a picture of what he was referring to. The attached photo is the frame on his 1970 c10

Re: frame vin decoding
Your frame is a pre 67. Your friend is right, the front horns on the frame changed in 1967. Take a picture of the whole frame and I can get you closer to the year. Preferably on from a top angle.

Re: frame vin decoding
I actually found a thread on the boards that will help you identify it. The 1960-62 were X frames.
