Electronic ignition
Hey guys, I just have a question for you. I bought a new to me 72 GMC c15 with a 6 cylinder. At some point someone put an electronic distributor on here. The problem I have is its not starting. It turns over really well, fuel pump works good, spark plugs are giving good spark, and the carb seems to work alright, though it could use a rebuild. Is my distributor wired right? It is in the right firing order, however is it possible all are rotated to the right one? Attached is a picture of how mine is wired, and the next post is a picture I found on the Internet. Let me know if I need to move them around. Thanks guys. Engine newbie here.

Re: Electronic ignition
Your engine pic shows the usual Chevy Rule Of Thumb -- that Terminal Number One points directly at Cylinder Number One. As long as the firing sequence of 1-5-3-6-2-4 is in order, it probably doesn't matter, as shown in your Google reference pic. His terminal number One is facing Cylinder 4. Nice clean install, otherwise.
Your set up would look proper to an experienced Chevy L6 tuner. If it runs OK, don't change a thing.

Re: Electronic ignition
Well that's the problem. It doesn't seem to fire up how it is. The last time the truck was registered was 1987 to I'm trying to figure out how to get it going. Not mechanically inclined, but learning.

Re: Electronic ignition
Throw a couple sugar
beets in the box and it'll run!! LOL!! JK!! But do check the power wire to the bat side of the distributor. Needs to be a dedicated 12v supply. It might be wired to the old resistor wire. |

Re: Electronic ignition
Take the spark plug out of #1 cylinder, remove power feed to the dizzy, bump engine over until that cylinder comes up on compression (have a buddy assist), remove cap, and see where the rotor is pointing, should be close to #1, if it is pointing toward #6, then the dizzy is 180 degrees out....

Re: Electronic ignition
I'll be checking it all tonight. I was told it ran when parked. I will be getting a module from a buddy if mine is no good. The exhaust has rusted out just before the muffler, and there are mice where I live. Is it possible for it not to fire if the exhaust is plugged just under the manifold?

Re: Electronic ignition
Well, I set the timing right and nothing seemed to work. Tomorrow going to install new plugs and wires and see if that helps, the plugs seemed pretty bad after further inspection. If that doesn't help, should I take off the manifold that the carb mounts to and clean it? The bottom of it seemed a little gummy

Re: Electronic ignition
>>Tomorrow going to install new plugs and wires and see if that helps<<
You could have 2 or 3 bad plugs and maybe 2 or 3 bad wires and it's still possible it would start and run like crap. Even if only one cylinder sputtered and fired off, you would know it. If the plugs are firing, then you know the supply voltage is probably good enough and the module is good. If the plugs are firing then explain >>Well, I set the timing right << Are you saying you static timed it?
