door wont open

hey guys, I have been getting a little bit of a problem from the GMC lately. when i go to open the driver door from the outside, the button depresses but doesn't open the door. the inside handle does not work either for this. i found the only way to alleviate this is to push the lock button down (hard to push) and then pull it back up, and then the door will work fine on both sides. it has gotten worse and worse, now i pushed the lock knob down and it bent a little bit, wont pop up, and the door wont open from either side. I am gonna tear into the door tomorrow morning, any advice before hand on what I should do to fix this? tia

Sound's like you need a new door latch. Maybe check to make sure it is not all screwed up..

if you have to lock it, then unlock it, and the lock is hard to push...try using some white lithium or something, and lubing all the latch mechanisms up inside the door.

thx 68 stepside...i didn't get a chance to look at it yet (2 day date, whoa) but i was thinking along those lines. sliding across the seat is getting old, it wouldn't be so bad if i had a 2wd automatic, but i have a 4 spd 4 wheel drive, so its like a jungle of shifter levers i have to shove my legs thru, and im 6'4" so its not fun at all.

well i finally got the 3 hour job from hell done. i opened up the door, and found out that basically the mechanism just needed some lube. it was workin ok, then i slammed the door and it wouldn't shut, just bounce back open. i have to disassemble the mechanism and discover that about 3 pieces of it are missing.
a little work with a magnet and i find all the pieces in the bottom of the door. the rivet that holds that catch that the outer door button presses had fallen out of the mechanism, and the catch, spring, and rivet fell into the door, letting the gear on the catch just spin. now I am done (finally) so if your doors are acting up, check the rivets in the mechanism!
