Starters
I think my mini starter I am running in my crawler may have died. SB406 with block huggers. I had to run the mini to clear the headers. The stock starter was just a tad too long. Anyone know of a cheaper stock starter that is no longer then 9"?

Have to use the correct starter bolts though, unfortunately I don't have it right at the moment. I'm sure someone will chime in with that info...

The options that are most popular are the gm high torque min starter (red bow tie one) and the Hitachi mini starter. Have used both on my 454 83. The GM starter was a little less powerful with heat soak so I went with the Hitachi, but now the Hitachi makes a high pitched squeal and no start when hot occasionally, even though the auto electrical shop who installed it says it is installed and shimmed correctly. I am debating about putting the bow tie starter back in - it had a slow drag when the engine was hot but it always started.
In any case, I found I needed a reflective heat wrap (about $20) around any starter to help with heat soak. |

Over the years I have used two GM/AC-Delco permanent magnet starters from mid-90s 5.7 liter engines. They are small but powerful and are available for either 153- or 168-tooth flexplate/flywheel. Sorry, but I don't know the length or P/Ns.
RockAuto shows several different P/Ns at $40 to $140. Your best bet will be a local parts store, so you can put your hands on one and return it easily if it doesn't clear your headers. IMO, new or rebuilt AC-Delco starters (actually rebuilt by AC-Delco) are much more reliable than aftermarket mini starters.
