Re: anyone install a double din radio Indash ?

Sits too low and the screen is blocked from proper viewing by both the wheel and shifter.
I put my kenwood double DIN in my overhead console.
see link in sig below.

Re: anyone install a double din radio Indash ?

Think you would be better off with a flip out screen single din radio. A full size double din will not fit in the bezel, even the '89-'91 trucks only had a 1.5 din opening. If you completely remove that corner of the bezel, and fab up a new corner for the dash itself you might be able to fit it. It may take some thought to make it not look cobbied up.

Re: anyone install a double din radio Indash ?

Thanks. Mine didn't come with a overhead console so I didn't really think about putting it up there. Not sure how hard it would be to add and wire everything up. I'll check your write up BLE BURBAN.
I thought about a flip out screen and thought that it would be more in the way and vibrate a ton that would probably drive me crazy.
I keep doing some research and see what I can find

Custom built center console. This is the wrong year but you get my point.

What about a rear view mirror with a screen in it for a back up camera ?

Re: anyone install a double din radio Indash ?

Thanks guys.
Ya a rear view mirror with camera might work. Don't know how I would hide all the wiring with the mirror being a little lower on these trucks.
I did find a couple pics of thus truck that has 1 in dash. Looks like a pretty clean install.

But a screen that low might be hard to see tho.

Another option is to open up the dash where the center A/C vent is at right above the ashtray and install it there.

Re: anyone install a double din radio Indash ?

I did it. I installed a pioneer double din in the factory location in my 1989 square body crew cab Chevy it is a tight fit but worked for me. The truck came from the factory with a slightly larger radio. To make it work I ordered a radio sleeve that was specifically made for my model of the pioneer radio I had bought I placed the sleeve in the dash where I wanted by cutting on the dash with a small body saw and then using my mig welder that is set up to weld thin sheet metal I tack welded the radio sleeve in place where I wanted. The original radio was a little wider than the double din so I have 2 small gaps on the sides that are not noticeable but I plan to try trim to fit then glue a trim plate that I have from another double din radio or I can get another instrument panel from a truck that did not have the big radio mine had.

Note: Be very careful the take every precaution to prevent slag from hitting the carpet it can catch on fire quickly.

Also I think it works best with a radio that does not have a folding face. The screen will be smaller to make room for the CD slot and extra buttons but I find the buttons are easier to locate when driving. I am really happy with my double din one of the best mods I have done. I apologize that I don't have any pictures of my radio on my build page I done.

Re: anyone install a double din radio Indash ?

I'd do the rear view mirror setup before resorting to chopping up the dash. I've driven the rear view mirror setups, pretty nice actually and in a natural spot you would look when backing up Easy to see. Plus you get all the other cool features like outside temperature, compass, and an auto dimmer any time headlights come up behind you. I find myself putting these modern mirrors in our classic cars.

It's actually easy to hide the wiring. You could do what all the newer cars do with low mirrors and make it look factory, they have plastic channel that runs straight up to the reveal molding (how my duramax is done) or they use a simple flexible wire covering and grommet (how my sons mustang is done)
Lots of options there.
