points to hei

Good evening gents
1966 c20 250 4spd all stock stuff. I am thinking about putting in a stock HEI distributor. Mine is pretty worn. According to the numbers by the distributor it is a 1971 engine. I have not checked the head numbers. Do I just by a HEI distributor for a 1975 engine? I use spark plugs for what year. What else do I need to know? Thanks, Lowell

Re: points to hei

I got one from a 78 Nova 250 in a junk yard. It looks like the original cap because the electrodes in the cap are so corroded but it sure works better than the points distributor. I pulled the wire out of the ignition switch connector, put in a terminal with short piece of wire, then Teed onto the old one and ran a new one to the distributor to get the full 12 volts. Once I gave the distributor enough advance it runs and starts really good. Looked all over the junkyard for a spare module from the V8s but all had been stripped.

An option would be to replace the bushings in the distributor and replace the points with a Pertronix module. Keeps the look of the point distributor with the dependability and RPM capability of an electronic ignition. And you don't have to change plug wires.

Otherwise, I would just use an HEI that would fit a 75 model 250- including plugs and wires.

Re: points to hei

Just for reference, I put an HEI distributor from a 1980 pickup with a (I presume) 250 into my '65 230. It fit perfect and worked like a champ. You can probably use just about any year in between that range.

The 75-77 truck HEI's had an external coil. Its best to use the 78 up or car unit.
