Hey guys, this question has probably been answered but Ive searched and searched and just cant find the answer. Ive got a 58 apache with the three speed column shifter and Id like to bolt a sm465 to it and convert to 4x4. Possible? How difficult? Is the bolt patternt to the bell housing the same so I can just throw it in?
*Also, no, I dont have it laying beside me so I cant just simply try it. Thanks for any info guys!! |

The bearing retainers are different, with the SM465 being longer. Here's a little info. doable, but will need some machining done.

The diameter of the brg retainer where it goes into the bell housing is larger on the SM 465. You need to get a bell housing from a 68 up that used a SM 465 or have yours machined out.

I'd go along with wrenchbuilder on the bearing retainer diameter not being the same but you can't swap the post 61 bellhousings to a stovebolt six. You can cut the od of the retainer down, swap for a smaller diameter retainer or worst case have the bellhousing machined. That might be spendy though.

Re: will Sm465 mount to stovebolt
I found my answer!! And thanks guys you gave me googling ideas that led me to it ha!
Per Novak Adapters, who will do the machine work (they say theyve done it quite a bit) you have to turn the bearing retainer down to 4.995" and the bell housing FROM the stovebolt will have to be reamed to 5.000". |

Ah Now I remember what I was going to look up when I got home from work last night. Good going. That should be a simple machine shop operation now that you have the measurements.
