I am putting power steering and brakes in my 65 and the column is in bad shape I have attached a you tube video of the amount of slop in the column.

Personally I would change it out to one from 67-72 that has the intermediate shaft instead of the single piece column. I did it to mine and was glad to know I have the 2 piece collapsible column.

Is the any way to identify what year a column is, mine was missing the piece for the gear selector, I ordered one for my year model but it didn't fit

There is definitely something seriously messed up there but there is no reason it can not be rebuilt. It just depends on how much time and money you want to spend on it. And unless you buy a new or rebuilt column, there is no guarantee that it is going to be much better.

There is something about your column shaft that doesn't look like it is original forward of the outer column in the engine compartment. I think someone previously did something that is not right.

kev classic sells rebuilt 67-72 tilt column to fit 60-66 trucks the wiring is plug n play or you can get a column for ididit, buying a used column will 50/50 on if it is better or not.

Re: steering column issues- need help

I agree cap fab that something is not right, it seems as though the shaft is too long for the column.

it is the collapsible shaft type so I think it is out of a 69-72 truck but I dont know why there is soo much slack it in.

also can I have more info on kev classics, I tried to look them up but no luck

Re: steering column issues- need help

I know that when I did the P/S on my truck that we had to shorten the shaft by approx. 1 3/4"
Not sure if this has been done yet on this one.
