What a week!

I took off 3 business days this week to work on the truck and go to BikeFest here in Tampa. Spend the first 2 days getting parts to do the work this weekend. Finally got the truck out of the shop late on Friday after having a new Intake, carb, transmission, valve covers and alternator bracket installed. I drove it around the block and headed to the house to take the old transmission and old tires out of the bed and threw my back out. Rested for a little while and headed down to the yard to look for bucket seats when I heard a low sounding knocking coming from the engine. The next thing I know it is getting loud real quick and the engine shuts down. Stuck on the interstate in the middle of nowhere, I let it sit for a little while and then started it back up and went home at 10 mph. I think I lost a camshaft or main bearing. Man that is the pits, more money to spend. Do any of you have any ideas how much work is going to be involved in this one? The oil looks Ok and is not low, the engine did not get hot, I started to hear a high pitch knock toward the end. It is a 402BB which was rebuilt 4000 miles ago and was balanced and blue printed. Should I just do the lower side or get a short block and go from there? I am your true back-yard mechanic.

You should take it back to the shop that built it and have them look at it.

Cool What a week

I would take it back, but I bought it from my brother in Texas, who bought it from a mechanic a couple of years ago who has since passed away. My brother was a good friend of the mechanic and is familiar with the truck. The shop that did the work this past week, only did the top end. I would rather take it to a rebuild shop and have them look it over, I am just not sure what all is needed.

Thanks....Joey

I would strip it down, then take the short block to a rebuild shop.

Could be either a rod or main bearing. If it spun a rod, that would require a different crank. If it spun a main...kiss the block good bye. Sorry...either way is going to hurt the wallet pretty bad.

I've heard of a baffle in the oil pan to prevent/slow-down such a problem.

Take it and have them look at it, sounds like a bearing or something like that.

I've heard big block oil slurping stories too but I can't say I've heard of any more bottom end problems in the 402s than in small blocks, so I question it but i'm not saying it aint so.
