My new truck.. 1972 C-20

Hey guys, im new to the site and i just wanted to say hello! My names Matt snd i bought a 1972 C-20.. Thanks for adding me.. im here to learn more about my new buy and save some cash by tinkering on this bad boy myself.. sooo, ive had a problem with my new Quadrajet carberator.. it would run fine for a day, then she would act like the idle was to low and stall.. after taking the carb off, i noticed sand in the carb filter.. i automatically checked my inline filter and sure enough it was full of sand too... i pulled my gas tank today and cleaned it out... absolutely no rust, but i got about a half cup of this weird looking green sand... this stuff is so fine, it got through both filters... im just at a lost of words... i thought maybe the previous owner sand blasted the tank but this sand is getting through a 20 micron filter... very weird.. but yup, thanks again for the add and im sure you guys will be hearing from me... have a great evening!

Yes sir! I work in the construction field, these boxes are a life saver! But yeah, i bought this truck from Craigslist for $3,600.. it has a rebuilt 1979 350 in it.. love this thing..

Not sure about the sand but I'd replace the sending unit, fuel lines, fuel pump, fuel filter and buy yourself a Holley or Edelbrock or get the Quadrajet professionally rebuilt. Start with a clean fuel system from tank to carb. That sand has to have gotten into every part of the fuel system.

If you get a Edelbrock or Holley, you might want to get a specific pump and get yourself a fuel pressure gauge too and maybe a pressure regulator as well.

Im in the process of doing so right now.. i just pulled and cleaned the tank.. pulled the fuel lines and replaced the inline fuel filter and also added another just to be safe.. trying out a different filter. And the quadrajet was professionally installed and tuned by my mechanic.. he is stumped on the sand as well.. because of how fine it is... she runs fine with original quadrajet, but not the new one i got from Carquest.. dies/stalls on me after a few hrs of driving.. the truck is my daily driver, but once i found out about the sand, there no way in hell im goin to drive without being certain that its all out of her system.. Heres a pick of the sand i filtered out after the tank cleaning, dumped half of by accident but there was alot. Putting her back together 2mro..

Wow crazy man!! Never seen anything like that.

Good luck. Be careful adding more than 1 filter it can cause problems. 1 filter should be sufficient if it's a quality filter.

Right on man, appreciate the advice.. i didnt think adding another filter up the line would be a problem..would it? I was going to add one where the sending unit meets up with main fuel line. The other one is at the end of the fuel line right before the fuel pump... i found some glass filters at Orileys instead of those cheesy plastic ones.. the sand was getting past them and clogging up the carb filter.. soooo, should i pull my fuel pump since it got past the filter? I sprayed it pretty good with carb cleaner when i cleaned out the lines.. its just weird how the truck drives fine with the original Carberator.. runs like a champ..

Like the utility bed. That can come in handy since you plan on using it for work.

The sand was probably put in there by some knuckle dragger that didn't like the PO. It's too easy to get it into the tank. It doesn't cause serious damage, just a PITA to get your truck on the road again.

Tank painted... going to replace the floor panels another time but i went ahead and grinded the rust and sprayed it with a rust converter to help stop the rust.. i love this stuff.. so much fun and im learning lots... just hard to find time, i just had a baby boy!!!

Yes sir, he sits in the center! He loves this truck just as much as i do lol.. only thing that puts him to sleep when hes super fussy.. congrats bro! But yeah, alot of people talk sh#@ that i ride around with him, but this truck is waaaay safer than these new plastic ones! We just got a 2015 Jeep Renegade for a family vehicle, but i feel safer driving my truck than that thing...

Newer vehicles are designed to take the impact and are safer but I don't see any laws being broken, I went all over the place in a '32 fordor sedan when I was young and I turned out ok!

That looks like foundry sand for making casting moulds. I'm with custom10nut, somebody got Po'd at a previous owner (or you) and dumped it in the tank....

I have seen a JD excavator that was run all day after the hyd. cap wasn't put back on and it collected enough dust in 10 hours to restrict filters and throw a light in the dash Maybe the cap was lost or not closed tight and road dust got in there before it was replaced? Right on.. thanks for the reply.. it does have a metal locking gas cap, but its pretty wobbly/not a snug fit... i purchased a cheap plastic one from the local autostore but same thing, a little loose... if i just filled up and take a sharp turn, gas spluges from the fill tube.. i do go to the beach alot, can it be getting sucked into the tank? When i got the truck it had a vented gas cap, thats whats on it now....
