Ex military truck gears
I'm thinking to buy an 1985 ex military K30 6.2 liter diesel, but I know that military trucks have a modified transmission with different gears.
This one is an automatic 3 gears, do you think it's a boring drive and I should change the transmission ? |

Re: Ex military truck gears
The CUCV axle gears are 4.56:1
The CUCV TH400 has the same gearing as the Civilian version. Will you be running it on the highways or locally?

Re: Ex military truck gears
A diesel with 4.56's sounds like just the ticket, then.

I didn't realize you were from Italy either. With your username and Avatar Would have never guessed. I didn't know there were rednecks in Italy.

Re: Ex military truck gears
With a 6.2, TH400, 4.56 you'll be at very high RPM on the highway (unless you have significantly larger tires than stock). It'll work well at low speed though.

I was also wondering to put dually wheels on the truck, (I'm a dually fetishist) what do you think about ? I could have problems to the rear axle ? Last edited by Redneck79; 04-25-2016 at 02:42 PM. |

Re: Ex military truck gears
Great looking truck!
As an aside, my dad was project manager for the CUCVs back in the 1980s at the U.S. Army Tank-Automotive Command (TACOM). They had some early teething problems, but worked out the kinks early on. They're solid trucks. After all, they're Chevys!

Re: Ex military truck gears
I imagine you'd need a flatbed in order to fit dually 36s. The internals of the rear axle are the same for 3/4 ton, 1 ton SRW, 1 ton DRW, and CUCV truck (which I think is just a 1 ton SRW). However, the DRW axle is wider. I'm not sure if you could fit dually rears with the axle you have, seems unlikely with the tire size you have. Additionally, the front setup is wider... I'm not sure whether it's the center section or just the hubs on squares, I know modern trucks it's the center section but someone said it was just the hubs on squares.

Re: Ex military truck gears
Some M1028 and M1031 CUCV can be found with dual wheels. It was a motor pool add on kit for the M1028 & M1031 making it an M1028-a2.

I found this info about CUCV axles by models, do you think are correct ? M1009 10 bolt axles front and rear with 3.08 gears and a Gov-Loc in the rear (Not Dana 60 front and 14 bolt rear like some believe) All other CUCV’s Dana 60 front Front Capacity 4.5 Quarts 14 Bolt FF rear with Detroit locker and 4.56 gears (some have a true-track locker in the front as well, but it is rare) Rear Capacity 5.4 Quarts M1028 needs GM additive |

Axle capacity is in PINTS not quarts... The M1028A2 and A3 should have the transfer case of the vehicle it was converted from. M1028 dually conversions should still have the NP208 transfer case M1031 dually conversions should have the NP205. Re: Ex military truck gears
M1009 is the CUCV version of a k5 Blazer. The truck you are looking at buying in the pictures above appears to be a M1008.
