What Do You Think It Is???
So I noticed a bit of a noise tonight coming from some where in the drive line - I think. It was a kinda "whirring" or "whining" noise. More noticable while coasting or breaking than accelerating. There was also a little vibration, but I'm not sure that this hasn't been there before.
I was thinking u-joints (rear one is fairly new), but there was no "clunking" when getting back on the gas. I have a split driveshaft and I know the carrier bearing housing (the rubber part) is kinda worn. I haven't been under the truck lately to check the drive line, and tonight I got home too late to really care - so I thought I'd ask the experts and then go look around when I get the time. Thanks. |

U-joint , definitly.
I had the same noise in my drive shaft , but most of the time , it was when I accelerated. Fix it before it breaks completely ( I've been there ! I thought it could wait a little , I went back home truckless , the rear part of that drive shaft was stuck between the bed and the RR axle... ) Really easy to check , crawl under your truck and check for loosening , you can even see it with the eye The Baron

Thanks Baron,
I spent a little time under the truck yesterday (until it rained) . There was some slight movement in the front u-joint - not rotational movement, but I could move it up and down. Now it was difficult to tell if it was the u-joint moving or the shaft going into the back of the tranny, but I'm suspecting the u-joint. The rubber "housing" of the carrier bearing is getting looser as well. I can move it around quite a bit - I'd say a good 1/4" all around. I assume this is not normal either. Anyway, hopefully I'll get a chance to look at these things soon. Don't want to drop a drive shaft while flying down the road . |

i had the original ujoints in my drive shaft for the longest then i decided to replace them after i couldnt stand the humming anymore. and a week later the caps go flying off goin down the interstate doing 80 sounds like ive got a flat or something so i pull over look at all 4's, rev it up in neutral then acts fine then i get back on and drive for about a mile then it starts vribrating again and i think what the hell, but to make a long story short, get some high quality ones.

you lucked out, Christmas morning, i had a U-JOINT cap come of. i slammed on the brakes , due to that loud clunk, sent mr spinning in a donut in the middle of the road. glad it was early Christmas morning and there was no traffic. anyways, i ended up slidding down a ditch at about 70 mph and stopped abot 5 ft from a LARGE culvert. cracke the tranny case tail shaft and all the way around the bell housing. and they were new U-JOINTS. i will not use the U-JOINTS with the clips on the inside anymore, the ones that go on the outside at the end of the caps are the ones i use from now on.

Thanks for all the horror stories guys
I certainly hope that I get a chance to do the work shortly. I've been out of town most of the last month and a half. So when I get home to stay tomorrow, I'll have to dig into it. My inlaws want me to haul some rock for them before winter comes (my Father-in-Law's truck is just a F150 )... so I better get this looked at before taking on some big loads. Thanks again |
