Starter question

I just sat the motor in my truck Saturday and need to get a starter. It is an 86 350 ,using the factory 62 bell. Will the newer starters bolt to the block without interference from the bell? I can find the old style, but have to order it.

Re: Starter question

Let me answer that...I too had the same dilemma. If you use the two bolts to bolt it up, it may or may not work for you and that depends on what type of starter you have. I tried one of those minis too and it didn't work for me.

I then went the route of taking the old starter that had bolted to the bell housing and bolted it up and it meshed right up...each and every time. Took a lot longer to mount though. Pain in the rear actually...

If you can, find the older starters for these older vehicles. I believe they were for the higher compression motors and that was the best answer more me. They have more torgue and are about 1-2 inches longer.

Bottom line...if you can bolt it to the block and get it to start without chattering the gear teeth...you're good to go!

Thank you sir. I hate trial and error. I'll just order the old style.
