Spare Tire---82 GMC Short Bed
When I purchased my 82 GMC pickup shortbed it had the tire mounted in the bed. I was told the reason it was mounted there was becuase at one point someone added a hitch. From what I understand back in the day when they did that they had to pull out the spare tire carrier, which forces people to mount the spare somewhere else. First, I want to know if that is true and second what do I need to do to put the spare tire back underneath while still having a proper hitch. If anyone has any insight it would be very helpful.

The factory bracket for the spare will not work with most hitches.
I had the same problem with the hitch on my truck and had to make a new bracket out of angle iron and all thread. I will never keep another spare in the bed after having one blow up one day from the hot July sun that was beaming down.......it sounded like half a stick of dynamite when it blew! |

not necesarily true that someone added a hitch. GM did offer a bed mounted spare tire. i believe it was a factory option.

Where are you located? If you need all the stuff, I may have it. The shop in Rockwall, TX that bagged my 77 might still have my spare tire rack. Let me know if you are interested...
